If you’re like me, then you can only launch mildly-irritated birds at big green pigs so many times before you start to get bored. And while Angry Birds certainly is an entertaining diversion, if you are the kind of gamer that needs something a little more substantial and rewarding than you might want to take a look at Wind-up Knight.

Wind-up Knight borrows its story premise from Mario in terms of a brave hero rescuing the princess. However, where the two differ is that Wind-up Knight is an exercise in timing and coordination that doesn’t get shy about dispensing difficulty. The Wind-up Knight runs from one end of the screen to the next and it’s your job to jump, shield, roll and slash at the various obstacles in your path. Since you can’t control the horizontal movement, your reaction time and memory retention are your only allies.

What makes Wind-up Knight truly remarkable is its approach to the pay as you go plan. Typically, “free” games are usually free with a catch. Get the first few levels free and then pay with real money or use real money to make the game easier. Wind-up Knight, can be unlocked in its entirety using in-game currency – if you’re good enough at the game to accumulate enough.

Your reaction time and gamer skill will certainly be sharpened by the end of the ordeal, however you come across it. Just make sure your network can handle it. The game is rather large, even with some of the more reputable Internet service providers, and it can take a little while to download. This isn’t some flash game or picture hunt program. This is practically a triple-A title that you can get for free – provided you’re skilled enough.
