Star Wars Themed VW Passat by Artist Ken Lashley

November 7, 2011 Leave a comment

Here’s a car that got a lot of attention over at SEMA last week. The car is a VW Passat, but what makes the car so special is that it was covered from head to toe with hand drawn Star Wars art by comic book artist, Ken Lashley. The car itself was originally created during this past SDCC and auctioned off. It however found time to make an appearance at SEMA wearing some really nice Rotiform BLQs.

Above though, you’ll see the original time lapse video from VW on the creation of this one of a kind car.

Free Admission to Visit Any Participating Museum on Museum Day, Sept. 24th – Sponsored by the Smithsonian Magazine

I”m a big supporter of the arts and I think every child should be exposed to it. That’s why I love Museum Day. Sponsored by the Smithsonian Magazine, Museum Day allows you to enter any participating museum for free. I’ve done this with my family a couple of time already and I will say that my kids absolutely loved it. You’d be amazed at how much they really learn and soak up that it’s well worth the trip, even if the closest museum is several hours away from you.

You will need to fill out a form in order to claim your free tickets here, and while you’re at it, you can check out all the participating venues here.

In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission everyday, Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket…for free.

  • Only an official Museum Day ticket is eligible for free entry. Official tickets can be found here on the Museum Day website soon, stay tuned.
  • One ticket per household, for two people.
  • A ticket will gain entry to only one of the participating museums, excluding parking and special events and exhibits.
  • If museum reaches capacity, museum has right to limit the number of guests until space becomes available.

Random Photo – The Video Games Character Alphabet

You guys might remember the Superhero Alphabet we posted a few weeks back. Well the brains behind that fine piece of art, Fabien Gonzalez, is back and this one is based on video game characters. This has been posted by a few sites over the past few week, but some of you may not have seen it yet. You should be able to recognize some of your favorites in it. If you want a copy of the image, you can pick up a print of it over at Society 6′s website here and can even order a t-shirt based on it.

Poison shroom alert! Mario and Luigi should not be in the area when you crochet this…… just a suggestion.

Duct Tape and Video Games

April 21, 2011 Leave a comment

What do those two have in common, you might ask? I recently came across a channel dedicated to all things duct tape. YouTube user Ducttapestuff (a.k.a Johnathan) creates various items out of duct tape such as a duct tape tie, backpack, wallets and many more. Some of his creations are also video game inspired. They’re pretty sweet.

I couldn’t pass the opportunity to interview him and tell you guys about his awesome channel. Below is the email interview:

Me: How long have you been making duct tape wallets and items?

Johnathan: I’ve been making things out of duct tape since I was 13 years old. Soon I will have 8 years of experience working with it.

Me: What inspired you to work with duct tape?

Johnathan: Back when I was 13 I had a friend who had made a wallet out of nothing but duct tape which he eventually showed to me. I thought that it was a very cool concept and went home thinking of how to make one myself. Without any instructions or prior knowledge of working with duct tape I made my first wallet and that was the one thing that inspired me to keep working with tape.

Me: How do you come up with your designs?

Johnathan: Most of my designs are based on logos or symbols that already exist. I get a lot of ideas on new design decorations just by picking up symbols that I see on a daily basis.

Me: What inspires you the most when you create things with duct tape?

Johnathan: I would have to say all the people who are part of my Youtube channel. Every time I hop onto my channel page I can’t help but be inspired to keep moving forward with duct tape by seeing how many people are involved and actively putting their creativity into something they enjoy doing.

Me: What was one of your hardest creations?

Johnathan: One of my hardest creations that I have ever worked on is the Sonic the Hedgehog decoration on the wallet with the same theme. That one design was made by cutting out several pieces of small pieces of tape and then fitting them all together like a puzzle. Since each piece had to be the right size in proportion to the others it took a long time and a lot of careful work to make sure that the finished result looked nice.

ME: Which duct tape creation is your favorite?

Johnathan: I’d have to go with the wallet that has become my main wallet ever since I was 13. Not long after I made my first wallet I made another one which I intended to use as my personal wallet. After a few years it started to get a little beat up but it still worked like a charm so I kept using it. Now it’s almost 8 years later and I still use that same vintage wallet.

ME: Would you consider selling your creations?

Johnathan: I’ve considered it countless times and part of me would really like to sell wallets and other items that I make. The only things that are holding me back are the major influx of orders that I would get and the amount of time that would have to be spent taking those orders and fulfilling them. Right now my channel is based around tutorials and is a full time job to monitor, I can’t even begin to imagine how busy I would be if I threw selling items into that mix.

ME: How many wallets have you created so far?

Johnathan: I’ve created about 83 wallets so far.

ME: I noticed that you are a gamer. I love the Halo and Sonic wallets you’ve made. What other video game inspired wallets have you created?

Johnathan:  The Halo and Sonic series wallets are by far the most popular but I have also made a few wallets featuring the Tri-force logo as well as a few wallets from the Super Mario Bros. series.

ME: What are your favorite video games?

Johnathan: I’m a huge fan of the Halo series as well as the Super Smash Brothers series of video games.

ME: What consoles do you own?

Johnathan: I actually own a lot of consoles even though only a few of them get used. From Nintendo I have the original NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, and the Wii as well as the portable Game Boy color and Game Boy SP. From Sony I have the original Playstation 1. From Microsoft I own the Xbox as well as the Xbox 360. That just about does it. :)

ME: What games are you currently playing?

Johnathan: I’ve been playing Halo: Reach a lot, I think the most exciting thing about the game is the ability to play as a female spartan and to date I have never played as a male spartan. I must say that after playing as Master Chief for years it was a neat surprise to be able to play as a girl.

ME: What other hobbies do you have besides duct tape art and video games?

Johnathan: Two other hobbies that compete for my time are juggling and paintballing. I’ve been juggling on and off for about 4 years and have had the opportunity to both perform and attend a worldwide juggling convention. Paintballing has become one of my most exciting hobbies and I always try to get out to a field whenever I can.

ME: What advice would you give a fellow duct tape art enthusiast who is just starting out?

Johnathan: Six simple words “never give up, practice makes perfect”. When I first started I was very frustrated and even though there wasn’t anybody to look up to I always felt that I had to be better than I was. Only through working with tape day in and day out did I really start to get a feel for it and eventually hone my crafting skills.

Please check out Johnathan’s channel and subscribe for more duct tape creations!

Draw and Fold Over – A Social Drawing Game

February 17, 2011 Leave a comment

I’m blessed to have such artistically creative friends. If I didn’t have them, I would have never been introduced to this site. The site is called “Draw and Fold Over” and it’s a site that encourages social drawing. What you do on the site is you start a drawing that consists of 4 parts. You start the first part which is the head. After which you post up a link to the started drawing and have other people complete the rest of it. The creative part here is that these people do not see the parts that have been completed, only the very bottom of it. That means that the next person has to continue the drawing based on only what they see. This makes for some very creative and sometimes hilarious drawings.

I’d like to thank my good friend Brian Christopher for showing me this site as I’m having a bit of fun with it.

Vinylmation: Star Wars Series 1 Figures – Launch Events This Week at D-Street Locations

January 12, 2011 Leave a comment

This Vinylmation series was developed by Mike Sullivan and especially for the Disney Parks. It will not be available for sale via the on-line Disney Theme Park Store or at local Disney Stores. There will be 12 figures total and again, will only be available in the parks and not online.

There will be 2 special release parties for the new series and they will be located at the following:

In Florida, D-Street at Downtown Disney West Side will hold the first ever “midnight release party” at the close of Thursday, January 13 (so technically early Friday morning). As part of the festivities, Mike will be available to autograph figures from 12:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Mike will then book passage on the Millennium Falcon, and travel to D-Street at the Downtown Disney District in California on Sunday, January 16. He will autograph figures from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. D-Street will open at 8:00 a.m. that Sunday morning.

If you’re a Star Wars fan, I’d definitely go check out both events if you are near the area. I’m about 4 hours away from Orlando which is not too far away, but it’s still a long trek for me and I”m not heading to any Disney Parks anytime soon. All I have to say is that I need someone who lives in the Orlando area to buy me some of these. My birthday is coming up next week and this would make a fabulous birthday present. *wink wink.  :)

The Art of James Hance

September 2, 2010 Leave a comment

I’ve never heard of James Hance before but now that I have, I’m surely a fan of his art work. I’m especially interested with all his Star Wars related work he has done as well as a book he has out called “Wookie the Chew”. It has a very Calvin and Hobbes type feel to it and would be a great book to have added to any geek’s collection.

‘Wookiee The Chew’, in the style of the original Pooh books tells the adorkable tale of the little biped that belonged to Chrisolo Robin (and Chrisolo Robin belonged to him). 24 pages of affectionately crafted adventure, brand new illustrations and sneaky Star Wars references.

“Wookie the Chew” can be purchased from the artist’s site for $5 plus $5 shipping. Click here to order a copy or visit Cafe 331, 331 West Forsyth Street, Downtown Jacksonville or Universe of Superheroes, 2724 Park St, Jacksonville.

You should also check out some of James Hance’s other works which includes more Star Wars inspired art as well as The Muppets, Star Trek, Alf, The Doozers, and more! http://jameshance.com. There you can also purchase prints of his art work. At about $10 per print, I may have to pick some up myself.

DJ Lance and Lard Lad Dunny Arriving to Kid Robot Stores September 2nd

August 26, 2010 Leave a comment

If you have children, you know what Yo Gabba Gabba is and who DJ Lance is. In fact, you may even be a fan yourself. I know I am. As weird as the show it, it is very catchy and children seem to really love it. Kid Robot will be releasing a 3-inch DJ Lance Dunny September 2nd to all their retail outlets for $9.95. The DJ Lance Dunny was previously only available at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con at limited quantities but will now be available to the general public. This might be one of the most unnecessary purchases I make this year but its an item I need to have. “Just because” is my reasoning.

Next up is Lard Lad Dunny from the Simpsons which will also be available from Kid Robot on September 2nd. The massive mascot of Homer Simpson’s favorite donut emporium, Lard Lad is 6-inches of donut hoarding vinyl. Lard Lad will be available for $39.95 when it is released.

Geek Art: Marvel vs Capcom 3 – A New Hope for the Fate of Two Worlds

by *rodolforever

This is a great fan made poster for Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds which spoofs the poster used for Star Wars: A New Hope.

This is a poster I made for a FAN ART CONTEST, I choose DEADPOOL because is one of my favorite marvel characters partly because of his wicked sense of humor, he usually spoofs some pop culture icon so I went for it with the STAR WARS poster, also CHUN LI`s hair help a lot to choose her as princess Leia replacement hehehe
