Here’s an item I picked up for my NEX-5N that I’ve always wanted for a camera in general. I’ve always been a fan of fisheye photography so I figured since I have this fancy new camera now, I might as well get one. What you see here is the VCL-ECF1 Fisheye Conversion Lens. It works in conjunction with the 16mm f/2.8 (SEL16F28) which I don’t have yet.

The VCL-ECF1 turns the 16mm lens into a fisheye lens in which the images taken by this combination take up the entire frame of an image and doesn’t have the annoying circular black border like cheaper fisheye adapters. The fisheye conversion lens attaches to the SEL16F28 like a lens hood so it’s also possible to attach it to the 18-55mm kit lens. This however isn’t suggested as the fisheye lens doesn’t exactly work with any other lens other than the 16mm one.

Hopefully when I get my 16mm lens later this week, I’ll be able to take some sample shots as well as a full review. Until then, enjoy the unboxing images.

Rokinon is a well knows lens manufacturer that makes specialty lenses for a wide range of cameras. This includes Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and other DSLRs. Recently they’ve also begun making lenses for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras such as the Micro Four Thirds format and more recently, Sony’s E-mount format.

One of their newest lenses out right now is this Rokinon 7.5mm f/3.5 super wide angle fisheye lens. Rokinon is well known for their fisheye lenses and wide angle lenses and this one doesn’t disappoint. As you can see from the picture, it’s much smaller than some of their past fisheye lenses and much more aesthetically pleasing. It comes with a built in petal style hood and weighs only 6.2 oz. What makes these lenses so good is that images taken with these lenses fill up the entire frame of the image and do not have a circular black border like you see on cheaper fisheye adapters.

Specs:

Aperture range: f/3.5 – 22

Minimum Focusing Distance: 3.54 inches

Optical Construction: 9 elements in 7 groups

Maximum Diameter: 2.36 inches

Angle of view 4/3″ – 180°

Mount: Micro Four Thirds

The Rokinon 7.5mm f/3.5 fisheye lens is available in 2 different colors, black and silver, and retails for around $299 which is quite affordable for a dedicated fisheye lens of this quality. Note however that these lenses have to be used in manual mode and does not feature autofocus.

For Sony NEX E-mount owners, stay tuned because sometime in April/May, Rokinon will be releasing a 8mm f/2.8 lens which will update the current E-mount lens to the new smaller sizing.

You may have noticed over the past few weeks the addition of digital camera related posts, mainly the review of the Sony NEX-5N and a few accessory posts. That’s because I’ve returned to a hobby I once enjoyed in my younger days and that is photography. In my younger years, especially when I was still in school, I used to use an old Nikon N-body with Sigma lenses. Back then I used to develop my own film and shot mainly with black and white film. This however ended once my schooling was over as I no longer had access to a dark room nor did I want to spend money constructing one at my parent’s house.

Over the years, I still shot photos but I was back to using color film that I would have someone develop for me. Obviously this wasn’t the same as I no longer had much control over the developing process. At that time, digital cameras were becoming quite popular, but mainly in the point and shoot variety. My SLR went into storage and I’ve had several point and shoots since then. I never really picked up a new DSLR due to the price of them at the time and the current crop of point and shoot digital cameras were more than adequate for my needs.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2012. I have 2 kids right now and I love taking pictures of them, however my youngest, who is only 9 months old, is now mobile and almost impossible to shoot with a regular point and shoot camera. I’m not sure if others have this problem but she is like the Flash and almost ever image of her was a blur. I said to myself, “now is the time to pick up a real camera.” In one of my earlier posts from this year, I had posted how I was on the search for a DSLR or one of those new mirrorless interchangeable lens system cameras. I was fortunate enough to borrow a friends Nikon D5000 and that really sparked my interest in real photography again. I knew I wanted something that allowed full control over my shots and I eventually went with a Sony NEX-5N as my own personal camera.

Instead of creating a new blog for my photography interests, I’ve decided to integrate it into my current blog, which is thegamerwithkids.com. Sure it has nothing to do with gaming, but it’s something that defines a part of me and this blog was created really to share my interests. Plus I’m sure a lot of parents out there face the same kind of problems I do when it comes to photographing their children. I’ll be mainly posting about mirrorless system cameras such as the Sony NEX series or the Olympus PEN since this is a natural step up from compact point and shoot cameras. This doesn’t mean that they are less capable than DSLRs though as that is not the case at all. In fact, with these new breed of cameras, you are able to take images that are just as good as traditional DSLRs and in a much smaller package.

I’d like to say thanks to all those who have been reading my blog and hope you’ll enjoy these new posts as well.

Animal Zoo Matching is the latest children’s matching game from developer Minimax Games. This is their 3rd matching game they’ve come out with and it’s arguably their best so far. As you can tell by the title, the game features animals that you would mostly find at the zoo. What makes Animal Matching Zoo different from their previous matching games is the inclusion of a new mode. The game now features Mystery Mode which I’ll explain later but it makes the game a lot more challenging for children, especially those who think standard matching games are too easy.

I’ll start off by saying that if you’ve played Minimax’s other matching games, this one will be quite familiar too you. Gameplay mechanics are the same where there are 5 different difficulty levels you can play. Match animal pairs with each other until you clear the board. What’s different now is the addition of Mystery Mode. In this game mode, you can still choose 5 different difficulty level, but instead of matching animal pictures, you’ll be matching them based on their sounds. That means that as they flip over cards, they’ll hear the sound of the animal instead of a picture of the animal. This makes the game so much harder because unusually, games like this are based on visual memory and not auditory memory.

In Animal Matching Zoo, the artwork is also much better than their previous games. It seems like with each new iteration, the graphics, artwork, and sounds get better and better. Is it worth picking up this title if you’ve already bought any of the previous ones? It’s a toss up. If you’re child is still into matching games, the inclusion of Mystery Mode can be fun and challenging. If you’ve never bought any of the previous matching games, this is definitely the version to get, especially with the new game mode.

Animal Zoo Matching is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is a universal app and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Now that I’ve had a chance to review and use the Sony NEX-5N, I can honestly say that I’m in love with the camera, even though there are a few downsides to it, mainly the lack of available lenses at the moment. Sure you can use the many adapters that are available for the camera now to make use of lenses from Nikon, Canon, and Olympus, there are downsides to this, mainly the fact that this turns the NEX into a full manual camera.

The good news however is that there are 3rd party lenses either here already or on the way. Same goes for official Sony e-mount lenses. They are coming slowly, but they are coming. Below are the 3rd party lenses that are available now as well as those coming very soon from Rokinon, Tamron. and Sigma. In most cases, the 3rd party lenses are a bit more affordable than the Sony lenses but they don’t sacrifice price for quality. These 3 manufacturers are pretty well known in the photography circle so you can’t really go wrong with purchasing one of these.

Sony has a similar lens 18-200mm f/3.5-6.5 lens available too for the NEX series. The Tamron however is a very good alternative that features all the same functions as the Sony lens and is a little more affordable than the Sony lens. For more information on the Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3, you can check out Tamron’s website here for full specs and details. The lens retails for $739.

Rokinon 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye Lens

The Rokinon 8mm Ultra Wide Angle f/3.5 Fisheye CS lens is equipped with a Sony E-mount bayonet and was specifically designed for Sony’s NEX and E-mount series. Due to Sony’s one-off construction of their NEX and E-mount series, the bayonet mount was carefully adjusted to ensure the widest possible field of vision and to prevent vignetting. Just like in other lenses constructed for filming purposes, aperture adjustment is perfectly smooth. It gives you a 180° view with dramatic, exaggerated perspective. With hybrid aspherical lenses and multi-layer coating, you will produce sharply defined images with a minimum of flare and ghosting. The 8mm lens focuses as close as 1′ (30.48 cm) from the lens, and has a built-in petal lens hood.

The Rokinon is for anyone who is really serious about taking fisheye images. At 8mm, it’s a very wide angle lens. The only issue with this lens is that it is a full manual lens. Then again, it’s not the kind of lens you’ll leave on all the time and the combination of Sony’s peak leveling feature and MF-assist focusing, it makes using a manual lens quite easy. The lens sells for roughly $299.99, so it’s really not a bad deal for a really well made lens. It’s not a bad alternative to the Sony 16mm f/2.8 with the fisheye attachment.

You may wait to hold off buying this lens however as there is a new Rokinon fisheye leans coming out that is also a 8mm lens but with a f/2.8. It’s also almost half the size of the current lens which in my book, is a huge plus. Look for this new lens at the end of March.

Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens & Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens

The Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens is a standard fixed focal length lens designed specifically for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. This 30mm lens is equivalent to a 60mm lens in 35mm format and provides a 39.6° angle of view.

Featuring a newly developed linear AF motor, this lens is ideal for use with video and still photography. The linear motor helps to guide the lens elements directly without the need for gears or other noisy mechanical parts, providing quiet and accurate focusing.

An aspherical lens design across 2 glass elements provides correction for distortion, field curvature, and color aberration while Sigma’s super multi-layer coating helps to reduce ghosting and flare. With a minimum focusing distance of 11.81″ / 30cm, there is room for selective focus and creative depth of field applications, featuring an attractive bokeh due to the rounded 7 blade diaphragm. Sharp and high contrast results are available throughout the aperture range, even with the wide f/2.8 opening.

Aspherical lens design provides correction for image distortion, field curvature, and color aberration.

Multi-layer coating reduces ghosting and flare and provides greater contrast and color fidelity.

Rounded 7 blade diaphragm produces an attractive out of focus quality.

Equally sharp results are available from minimum to maximum aperture.

Linear AF motor directly guides lens elements for quick, quiet auto focusing, ideal for use with video recording.

Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens

The Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN Lens is a high-performance wide angle lens that is designed exclusively for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and has the equivalent angle of view as a 38mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the Micro Four Thirds systems and 28.5mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the E-mount systems.

Three glass mold aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for distortion, color aberration and field curvature. The inner focusing system corrects the fluctuation of aberration to maintain image quality regardless of the focal distance. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum aperture. The superior telecentric optical design improves image quality throughout the frame. This lens benefits from a newly developed linear AF motor which moves the lens elements directly without the need for gears or the drive of other mechanical parts. This system ensures accurate and quiet autofocusing, making the lens suitable for video recording as well as still photos. The lens features a rounded 7 blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. This Sigma 19mm F2.8 EX DN has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm/7.9in and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:7.4.

The Sigma lenses are a good alternative to the Sony prime lenses once they become available. The lenses don’t look as cosmetically nice as the Sony lenses but they seem to feature some new tech in them that makes them quieter and focus more accurately. I also like the fact that these lenses are an f/2.8. It also helps that these will come in at a lower price point than their Sony equivalent.

If you read my initial impressions of the NEX-5N, then you know that I was very impressed with the overall build quality and feel of the NEX-5N. This was judged solely on my first impressions of the camera upon holding it and seeing it in person for the very first time and really being able to examine the build quality. Well, it’s been a good solid 3 weeks that I’ve had the camera now and have been able to shoot daily with it in a variety of different instances and situations. I’ve been able to examine how the camera functions in day-to-day usage as well as image quality. Has real world usage changed my feelings on the camera? Read more and find out.

Just to make things clear, I’ll be writing most of this review for the average person out there who doesn’t really know the technical aspects of photography and camera usage. I’m not what you call a professional photographer, though I probably know more than most people. I’m more of a hobbiest / enthusiast. If you’re looking for real technical information on the camera, I highly suggest that you check out DPreview’s indepth coverage of the Sony NEX-5N which you can find here. It’s one of the main reasons I decided to go with the NEX-5N and not a traditional DSLR like the Nikon D5100 or the Canon T3i. I know my way around a DSLR and I’ve been using old school film SLR’s since high school so difficulty of use wasn’t a factor in my decision. The main issue for me really was bulk. I love DSLR cameras and what they can do, but on a day to day bases, I really don’t want to be lugging one around with me all the time.

Buttons

You’ll notice that the NEX-5N lacks a lot of the physical buttons and dials that many of its competitors have. The NEX-5N only has 9 buttons, not counting the on/off switch or the shutter release. Only 3 of those buttons are customizable and can be assigned to numerous functions. Two of the buttons you can only assign to 1 function but the third “soft” button as it’s called you can assign to either a single function or if you set it to “custom” mode, you can change this button to bring up a menu in which you can assign 5 custom settings to it. I set it to “custom” so that I wouldn’t have to go digging through the regular menu system for items I would normally use all the time.

For the custom buttons, I suggest setting one of them to toggle the Auto Focus settings so that you can easily switch between auto focus and manual focus as there is no button for that like you would find on most DSLRs. I also suggest assigning another button for Shoot Mode in order to skip a step in the menu and access the different shooting modes faster although it’s not necessary to do so if you don’t mind the extra step. You’ll probably also want to setup the last button as Custom so you can add and extra 5 shortcuts to this button.

That brings me to the menu system. Many of the reviews find that it is a bit confusing to use but in my opinion, once you go through it a couple of time and figure out where everything is, it’s really not that hard to figure out. In fact, if you set up some of these items to your custom buttons, you may not even need to use the menu system anymore. There are 6 main items in the menu – Shoot Mode, Camera, Image Size, Brightness/Color, Playback, and Setup. Shoot Mode, Image Size, Playback, and Setup are pretty self explanatory as those are modes that most digital cameras already have. You’ll want to play around with the Camera and Brightness/Color menus the most since this is where most of the more advanced settings are located. Like I said above though, a few of these settings in these menus, you’ll be able to assign to one of the custom buttons to make your life a bit simpler.

The Sony NEX-5N as stated above has a touchscreen. This helps a bit with accessing certain settings and features but you’ll actually find that if you have the camera set up a certain way, you’ll rarely even need to access the touchscreen. Most of the features can be accessed using the rear buttons and the jog dial.

Articulating Screen

On the subject of the screen, what I really like about it is that it is an articulating touchscreen. You can either tilt it up almost 90 degrees or tilt it down about 45 degrees. This is great for when you are trying to take images either really low or really high. The screen is also very solid and the mechanism used for the tilting seems very strong and tight, unlike some of the other articulating screens I’ve seen from other manufacturers. You’ll also notice that there is no optical viewfinder or even a electronic viewfinder on the NEX-5N. You’ll be shooting primarily by looking at the touchscreen. I was a bit worried about that as I grew accustomed using the optical viewfinder on the Nikon D5000 that I had for a week but in all honesty, I don’t miss not having one. It’s easy to compose images with the screen although focusing isn’t quite as fast as it would be on a regular DSLR. If you do want a viewfinder, you can opt for Sony’s EVF which is an optional add on and I hear its quite excellent although I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing on in person yet.

Focusing

Here’s one area that is a bit of a weak spot for the NEX-5N. In bright day light and or situations with plenty of light, focusing is pretty fast. It may not always focus on what you want it to focus on, but you can compensate for that by activating face detection if you are shooting people or use object tracking if you are trying to focus on a specific thing. You can even manually adjust the focus after it has autofocused on something if you want to fine tune the focusing a bit. It’s not as speedy as say when you’re using a DSRL with the optical viewfinder, but for the average user, I think its quick enough.

When we get into dim light situations, that’s where the NEX-5N can stutter a bit. Sometimes it takes a while to lock onto something to focus on, even with the AF-assist light. Because of that, I recommend switching into manual focusing mode and enabling Sony’s excellent focus-peaking system. With focus-peaking, while manually focus on an object, a highlighted outline will appear around the object that you are focused on. Basically if you are focused on it, it’ll show up in red. This makes it real easy to manually focus using the viewscreen. You can even enable MF-assist zoom which will zoom into the scene on your viewfinder so you can fine tune your focus even more. This method however takes a bit more time to focus on your subjects.

I’ve had some trouble focusing on subjects in low light using the autofocus, but that’s why I always just shoot more than I need just in case. Once you get the hang of using the camera, you’ll find that there are ways around it’s focusing limitations.

Battery

As I explained in my first impressions post, battery charging is a painfully long wait. I’ve had lots of digital cameras and for some odd reason, this battery seems to take forever to fully charge. It feels like roughly around 4 hours I have to wait for it to fully charge. Maybe it’s just the anticipation of wanting to shoot more photos but this is definitely a good reason why you should probably pick up a second battery for the NEX-5N. This way, you charge up one battery while using the other and then swap them out with little to no downtime. I will say though that battery life in general is pretty good. I was worried a bit about that since I’ve read that others were having issues with that, but for me, I averaged about 600+ shots at full resolution on 1 charge. This however could also be due to the fact that I don’t use the flash at all. Overall though, I’m very happy with the batter life on the NEX-5N and haven’t had the need to carry around a second battery yet.

Scene Modes and Creative Style

Sony added some really fun modes to the NEX-5N that casual users may enjoy shooting with. These are labeled under “Creative Style.” There are modes like Toy Camera, Miniature Mode, Retro, High Contrast B&W, and Partial Color. These modes add a bit of fun to your photos without you having to do most of the work during post editing. Aside from the creative styles, there are also a bunch of preconfigured scene modes you can take advantage of for certain situations. There are scene modes for sports, night time photography, landscapes, macro, and portraits just to name a few. If you don’t want to deal with choosing which mode to use, you can set the camera to iAuto and it’ll automatically choose the what it thinks is the right scene mode for the occasion. This makes the NEX-5N very accessible to casual shooters and beginners. That doesn’t mean that the more experienced won’t like the camera as it comes with full manual settings for those who want full control over their shots.

Image Quality

Now here is really the main reason why I purchased a Sony NEX-5N, the image quality. I mean when it comes down to it, what you really want your camera to do is take really good photos and that’s what the NEX-5N does. Colors are bright and vivid and most of the photos I’ve taken so far contain very little noise. Daytime photos are fantastic as well as low light photos. You can view a few test shots I took over the weekend on my Flickr page here. I’m still tweaking a few of the settings here and there but for the most part, I couldn’t be more pleased with the image quality. Again, I’m no professional so I could really care less about the quality of the image a pixel level, but for print usage and image sharing on websites, the quality is more than acceptable to me.

E-Mount Lenses

I like the e-mount lenses. They are well made and have a really good feel to them. I like that most of them feature an all metal outer shell which really gives them a feeling of quality. The focusing ring is very smooth as is the zoom ring. I like the fact too that Sony included a lens hood with the kit as well although I do wish they would have also included a lens cap for the back of the lens and a cap for the camera body itself.

Here’s one area that most people complain about with the NEX series cameras so far, and that is their lack of available lenses. The NEX-5N comes with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens to start off with. If you want additional lenses from Sony, you’ll be sad to see that there are only a handful available at the moment in e-mount configuration. That is not a lot at all and those wanting to expand their lens collection might be a bit disappointed with the selection. However, there is hope. There are some 3rd party lenses out right now and there will be more available soon. Sony has also stated that they will be releasing more lenses later this year and in 2013.

If you still can’t wait, there are tons of e-mount adapters available now that allow you to use lenses from Nikon, Canon, Sony’s Alpha mount lenses, and others.

Conclusion

Before I bought this camera, I went through some major research first. I was 80% sure I was going to buy a DSLR like the Nikon D5100 or Canon T3i. That was until I saw the NEX-5N in person. I was really impressed with the size of it, the build quality, and just the overall way that the camera looked. I did tons of research on the camera and was also really impressed with the image quality and the overall feature set of the camera.

I however wasn’t too sure about not having an optical viewfinder, built in flash, or the weak battery as some claimed. I am glad that however that I as able to overlook those faults as this really is a great camera. I don’t miss not using an optical viewfinder and I know that if I ever did want one, I could go with Sony’s excellent Electronic Viewfinder that is available for the NEX-5N. The flash I never really use anyways, so it’s not a big deal, and the weak battery is highly over exaggerated by many out there as I am quite happy with how many shots I can take on a single charge. The slow focusing in low light situations too might be a bummer for some, but there are workarounds for that too.

The Sony NEX-5N is a great camera for those coming off a point-and-shoot system or even those who have DSLRs and want something a bit smaller that can still take very advanced shots. The price of the camera isn’t too bad either at $699 with the kit lens. It is on the higher end of the mid-range mirrorless camera category, but you’ll find a lot of bells and whistles with that price.

If you want to take a look at some sample shots I took with the Sony NEX-5N, shoot on over to my Flickr set here.
