Stranded Without a Phone Review (iOS)

stranded_iconIn the crowded iOS game scene, it’s easy to miss some really good games. There are literally tons of great games out there that don’t get the exposure they need and because of this, gamers miss out on these gems. These are the type of games I like playing because these are the ones that usually bring something unique to the table and aren’t just the next “Flappy Bird” clones. With that said, I would classify Stranded Without a Phone from Gilligames as a unique game that tried to do something different with iOS gaming. The game is about survival and how you deal with being stranded on an island.

The premise of the game is simple. You’re trapped on an island with no way of getting off. Your objective is to stay alive and survive until you can call for help and be rescued. You do so by wandering around the island looking for supplies and then combining them to form more complex items. For instance, combine a stick and sharp rock to make a spear or or a bunch of rocks and some dry grass to make a fire. You’ll be doing a lot of this to survive as you’ll need to also search for food and other life saving supplies.  You can even hunt boars and fish for food. One of the main goals is to search for parts in order to make a radio so you can call for help and ultimately get rescued. You’ll have to scour every part of the island to find these parts.

Of course you’ll want to keep yourself healthy by eating food, drinking plenty of liquids, and getting lots of rest. Do not get injured and if you do, try to heal yourself. This is one of those games that requires quite a bit of time to play. The game can be a bit slow for some. Luckily you don’t have to play the game all in one sitting. The game will automatically save itself when you exit the app and you’ll be able to continue exactly where you left off.

For the most part, Stranded Without a Phone is an exploration and gathering game with a fair amount of crafting involved. On the PC, the closest game I’d probably compare this to is Don’t Starve, which was an excellent game. On iOS, as far as I know, this is the only game of this type that I’ve seen. This is a game for those who like to take their time and explore and create. It really is a unique game, one in which I think most people should try out considering it is free.

Search for natural resources, then use them to create other items using various combinations.

The Retina Edition includes several new features not found in the original game, including the ability to play as different characters, find and craft several new items, and multiple save slots.
