PlayStation 4 owners who didn’t make it into the beta of Firmware Update 4.50 will be happy to know that the official release of the software update will be released tomorrow, March 9th, 2017. There will be an entire host of changes that you can read about here on the official PlayStation.Blog site, but the biggest thing for users will finally be the ability to expand their storage space via an external harddrive (up to 8TB).
Before this update, users had to upgrade their storage space with quite a lengthy internal HDD swap procedure but now you’ll be able to just plug a USB3.0 HDD into your USB port and instantly gain more storage space after a quick format of your drive. I’ve been using an external HDD since the beta was released and let me tell you, it’s the best thing that could happen to the PS4.
Users who are still using the original 500GB of space have probably used it all up by now and then some so this is probably a welcome addition.
On that note, you’ll probably want to pick up a larger external HDD before the update drops so here are some recommendations (the SEAGE Backup Plus Slim 2TB is the one I’m currently using on mine):
- SEAGATE Backup Plus Slim – 2TB – $79.00
- SEAGATE Backup Plus Slim – 4TB – $119.00
- SEAGATE Backup Plus FAST – 4TB – $$179.99
- SEAGATE Backup Plus – 5TB – $159.99
