We looked at Rock Space’s new AX1800 Dual-Band WiFi 6 Router already but now we are taking a look at the Rock Space AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender. This differs from a regular router because you actually need a router for this extender to work. It does not work on its own. What this does is basically extend the range of your existing router so that you can get coverage in areas where your router would not normally reach and I’m sure a lot of you have experienced dead zones in your home before.
The Rock Space AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender is pretty easy to install. You just plug it into an outlet near your router to start with and go through the process of connecting it to your network’s WiFi. You’ll have to set the SSID and Password for this as this range extender acts more like a separate access point. It’s not like a mesh WiFi system where they all share the same SSID. After this is done, just unplug the AX1800 Range Extender and plug it in about halfway between your router and where your poor WiFi area is.
Since this isn’t a mesh WiFi system, you will need to manually connect to the extender if your device doesn’t do it automatically, but most likely you’re using it with something stationary in that area, like a smart TV or a PC/Laptop or something like a ROKU. Either way, just make sure you’re connected to the extender and not your original router to get the best speeds.
I’ve been testing the Rock Space AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender in my son’s room which gets the worst WiFi in the house due to where the room is upstairs. He was using a powerline adapter, which is good, but to him, the speeds were kind of lackluster. With the AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender, he’s getting triple the speeds, fewer dropped connections, and a lower ping when playing games. It should also be noted that the coverage area for this is about 1500 sq.ft.
This unit also seems to be very stable with consistent speeds. I’ve had another WiFi extender before that just didn’t seem to work correctly. This Rock Space one I haven’t had any issues with yet.
Aside from the connection speeds, the AX1800 Range Extender also has many of the same features that their AX1800 WiFi 6 Router has, such as MU-MIMO, WPA3 security, high-gain antennas, and an Ethernet port for wired connection.
So if you’re looking to improve your WiFi coverage in your home, the Rock Space AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender is a solid choice that actually works. I like that it only takes up one outlet and the placement of it allows for use of the bottom outlet. There’s also the option of using the included LAN port for devices that need a wired connection. Most of all, I just like that you’re getting speeds fairly close to what you’d get on the main router, just as long as your place it correctly. If you don’t, you’ll still get good speeds, just not as good. Regardless, the Rock Space AX1800 WiFi 6 Range Extender is a solid choice for speed, range, and coverage.
