Review: Mega Bloks Playground v1.1 (iOS)

First off, I’m going to start off this review by saying that Mega Bloks Playground is not meant for adults in any way, shape or form. In fact, it’s not even meant for anyone above the age of maybe 5 or 6. This game says its Rated 4+, but I really think it can be played by much younger children than that.

Mega Bloks Playground is not really a game. There is no way to “win” the game. Mega Bloks Playground is more of an experience for young players. As an adult, it really wouldn’t be fair for me to review this app as it is not intended for my age group. I decided instead to hand this game over to my 4 year old son and observe his reactions towards Mega Bloks Playground. He is much closer to the target age that Mega Bloks Playground is aiming for.

Mega Bloks Playground is very easy to play. Kids need only to learn how to swipe their fingers across the screen or tap on objects they want to interact with. Easy. Kids can choose between 2 on screen characters, a little boy and a little girl. There are a variety of objects on the playground children can interact with such as a slide, swing set, see-saw and hot air balloon.

My son at first had a tough time understanding what to do in this game, but after explaining to him the control scheme and the point of Mega Bloks Playground, he was quick to figure the rest out. Swiping across the screen is pretty simple and having the footprints appear on the ground is a nice touch. Tapping on objects to use them is also nice as it simplifies the movement a bit more. There is a small problem with the app recognizing swipes sometimes however like when the characters are stuck behind an object.

There are actually quite a bit of objects you can interact with; each with their own unique animations. If you have kids, you know how much they love stimulation so it’s good to see each item fully animated. Each item also has its own unique sounds so that’s also a plus when it comes to auditory stimulation. Toddlers at that age are usually quite a amused by sights and sounds so it’s good that Mega Bloks Playground has quite a bit of it.

Final Thoughts

Mega Bloks Playground is a very simple game. Maybe a little too simple. I know its meant for preschool kids but I almost want to see some kind of challenge in the game or some more educational value to it. As is, the app is like a very simplified version of the Sims without the complicated social aspects of The Sims. It’s like The Sims – Toddler Edition. Budge Studios has created a pretty decent toddler game that is sure to keep most toddlers occupied for quite some time.

I’d like to make some suggestions to Mega Bloks since their name is attached to this app. I’d like to see a lot more added to this game as there could be a lot more potential with it. I’d like to see much more characters involved that players could choose from that would make the game more personal. I’d also like to see more activities involved that require more thought. What I really hope that Mega Bloks would add to this game would be an actual Mega Bloks creator where children could build their own Mega Bloks creations. If Mega Bloks did all this, the game would appeal to a more wide range of children.

In the end, Mega Bloks Playground certainly does do what it says it does. This game definitely is for very young children. If you have any kids 4 or under, they should enjoy this game. Anyone older than that may find that the game doesn’t present enough of a challenge to keep their interests.

I do recommend this game for parents with very young children. It’s easy to play and there are lots of sights and sounds that will keep them occupied for quite some time.

MegaBloks Playground is available in the App Store now for 99 cents.

Note – this is a version 1.1 app so If they can improve the controls a little bit more and constantly update the app with more activities or playground objects, I’ll raise the score up

Rating: 3.5/5
