TGWK’s Review of “History of the World” v1.0 (iOS)

The Mustard Corporation’s latest game, “History of the World” has a rather unique take on the history of our planet. The actual game itself really has nothing to do with learning any bit of history at all except for what period of history the Earth is in. Instead the goal of the game is to watch how Earth grows from the beginning of time all the way until the end of time when it is destroyed. Your duty is is to protect the Earth and all life on it from being destroyed by asteroids and alien invasions. It’s an interesting concept that wraps itself around a pretty entertaining casual game.

In History of the World, you start at the beginning of Earth’s history and must protect it from possible asteroid collisions. The longer you keep Earth safe, the more time passes by on Earth allowing the creatures of the planet to evolve. This Earth doesn’t necessarily follow our own history however as I have been able to see dinosaurs evolve into a human like state. During the course of the game, aliens can also invade your planet if you let them. If an asteroid does strike your planet, all life at that time is destroyed and Earth becomes “for rent.” If you let the aliens land, they can repopulate your planet. It’s quite interesting and there are quite a bit of tangents that nature and go off on.

As exciting as that sounds, you don’t actually get to see any of that with fancy cgi or animations. History of the World presents all that information through text. The main focus of the game is protecting the Earth. You do that by tapping on asteroids that appear and destroying them in space before they collide with Earth. You can do the same with aliens or let them land. Basically that’s all you do in History of the World. It’s a tapping game plain and simple.

Graphically, History of the World is very simplistic. If you take a look at the screenshots, you’ll see that the bulk of the graphics consist of a spinning Earth and randomly sized asteroids that you must destroy. A couple gripes I have is that the objects can be quite small, especially on the iPhones screen. The pause button also is a bit too easy to hit by accident which can interrupt your gameplay if your in any kind of a roll.

In the end, History of the World is a relatively fun game that is simple to play. It’s suitable for a children and adults of all ages and at the moment, you can connect it to OpenFeight so you can compare scores with your friends as well as earn achievements. There are a few tiny issues with the game, but they aren’t anything that really affect the way the game plays.

History of the World is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It will work on all iOS devices with iOS 3.1.3 or higher.
