Millie & The Lost Key is a storybook app from developer Megapops. It is part of the Millie Was Here series. In this interactive storybook, we follow the adventures of a dog named Millie. She is no ordinary dog though. With her imagination, she makes simple tasks like a walk in the park into something as adventuresome as looking for lost treasure. In The Lost Key, Millie is in search of the key that will open a treasure of endless bacon. We follow Millie as she explores dense jungles filled with unicorns, piranhas, and pirates.
Each page is filled with interactive elements that your children will enjoy. Unlike other storybook apps where your child just sits there and listens to the narrator narrate the story, Millie & The Lost Key encourages your children to interact with tons elements on each page. The entire book makes use of many of the iPad’s features such as swiping, tapping, dragging, and moving utilizing the tilt sensors. There are even hidden stickers on each page that your child must look for and collect.
I really enjoyed the entire feel and look of Millie & The Lost Key. I like how they have real photos of Millie and combine them with some drawn elements whenever she is imagining things. It’s a great way to integrate real life places and events and differentiate what the imaginary portions are in her story. It’s also fantastic how much interactivity this entire book has. Almost every page has something to do or find which will help keep kids interested in the story. Instead of being just a passive audience, they become an active part of the story.
Millie & The Lost Key is one of the better storybook apps I’ve come across. The story is very imaginative and the interactive elements make the whole package that much more interesting. If you want to try out one of Millie’s adventures for free, Megapops does have an introductory story entitled Millie Was Here: Meet Millie which you can download for free in the App Store. I guarantee though that once you try out the free book, you’ll want to try out Millie & The Lost Key.
