JibJab Jr. Books is a storybook app from developer JibJab. If you’re familiar with JibJab, then you know they that most of what they make involves putting your face into stories or situations. It’s actually quita funny thing to see so when I heard that JibJab had mad ea storybook app for kids on the iPad, I had to check it out. JibJab Jr. Books is a free download with 1 included free book entitled “The Biggest Pizza Ever.” The app allows you to take a picture of anyone’s face and use it as the main character in the story. It’s a great concept in that it allows your child to really be in the story instead of just reading about someone else’s adventure.
You start off the story by creating a character to use in the book. You can either choose a male or female character. After that, you need to import the face of who you wan to be in the story. You can either take a picture using your iPad camera, choose a photo from your photo library, or access your photos from Facebook. Once you’ve imported an image, you’re ready to begin the story.
Like I wrote above, there is one free story included with this app, “The Biggest Pizza Ever.” There are other stories you can get, nut you have to purchase them through in-app purchases. It’s quite a long story with plenty of pages. JibJab did a great job with the illustrations in this book and the story itself is very fun and interesting.
There is one thing that the JibJab Jr. Books app lack and that is any sort of audio. For a kid’s book, especially one that is on the iPad, you would think that the book would include some kind of background music or even narration, but it doesn’t. It’s almost like just reading a plain old book which to me was just disappointing. I’ve seen plenty of other storybook apps on the iPad and almost all of them had more audio than this one did which is surprising considering that JibJab usually has tons of audio with their PC apps and eCards.
JibJab Jr. Books app has potential to be better than it is at its current state. I love the illustrations and the fact that users can import their own faces, but the lack of any sort of audio is very disappointing to me. On one hand, the app itself is free and the included story is free, but lacking any sort of audio makes me not want to buy any of the additional books. JibJab needs to rectify this if they really want to make JibJab Jr. out of this world.
JibJab Jr. Books is available now in the App Store for free. It is compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.
