Lights Off is a puzzle game from developer Steven Troughton-Smith that is based on the classic Tiger Electronic’s game, Lights Out. If you’ve been using an iPhone since the beginning, then you might recognize this game as being one of the very first native games to appear on the iPhone. The objective of the game is to discover the correct solution to turning off all the lights on the board. It may sound easy to do but in reality, it’s not and Lights Off is one of the most challenging games to hit the App Store. That’s no small feat considering how long this game has been around.
The game itself is graphically simple looking, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t look good because it does. The Lights have a 3D look to them that really stands out and when the lights are on, it really does look like there are lights underneath lighting up the tiles. It’s very simplistic, but that part of the charm. There is very little audio in the game with the only sound effect being a chime when you press on a tile. That’s it. No background music or ambient noises, just the tone it makes when you tap. You can turn this off if you wind it annoying as well as enabling vibrations if you’d rather go that route.
The game is very easy to jump into and play. Again, the objective is to get all the lights to turn off. Tapping on a tile turns it on or off as well as the adjacent tiles next to it, (left, right, above, or below). Somehow you have to tap in the correct sequence to get them all to turn off which is easier said than done. Some levels will have you scratching your head for a long time until you happen to stumble on to the solution. However, once you do figure it out, it’s a satisfying feeling.
Lights Off is a highly addicting puzzle game. It’s one of those games where once you pick it up, it’s very hard to put down because of the challenge. Once you finish one level, you immediately want to try and solve the next. I’m not entirely sure how many total levels are actually included in the game as it seemed to go on forever. If you’re a casual game and looking for a challenging, game to pick up that will really test your mind, I highly suggest picking up Lights Off.
Lights Off is available now in the App Store for free. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
