Duck Hunt AR is an augmented reality shooting game from developer InfinityK. If you’ve ever played the original Nintendo light gun game, Duck Hunt, then this game will be very familiar to you. Your main goal here is to hunt ducks in an 8-bit world with your trusted  dog by your side. Graphically, the game is almost an exact copy of Nintendo’s original game. The game however is laid out in a 3D like environment. 2D sprites are layered on top of each other to simulate depth.

Because this is an augmented reality game, all controls are based on motion and you move around the game by tilting and moving your iPhone around. The background is generated by using the rear camera on your iPhone so the background is always the environment you are playing it in. You could be hunting at the doctor’s office, your bedroom, or outdoors. It’s whatever you want it to be. There is an option to turn it off, but what fun what that me if it was just a plain old background? The controls are very accurate and it does one thing that I find very useful that other augmented reality games should think about doing. In Duck Hunt AR, it recalibrates the center of the game after each duck. This is a terrific feature because I find that I change the angle of my iPhone constantly while playing and this keeps me from having to play the game in uncomfortable positions.

Duck Hunt AR is a good tech demo of what you can do with augmented reality. It’s too bad though that Nintendo has ordered them to remove the game from the App Store. Seeing as the game itself is a near copy of Nintendo’s Duck Hunt game, I can understand why they would order a take down. You can however grab the game right now for free while it is still up in the App Store. I suggest you do because it is a pretty good game that is fun with controls that actually work.
