Happipets is an animal spelling app from developers Happi Ideas. This is not your average spelling app however as it has a few unique features for its genre. Happipets is about animals and the letters used to spell and make an animal. What that means is that not only will children be able to learn how to spell popular animal names, they’ll also be able build these animals using the letters in their name. Children will really have to use their imaginations with this app though as it isn’t always apparent how you can make these animals with the letters associated with their name, but luckily, Happipets makes it a bit easier to visualize these animals with the handy help feature.

There are three modes available in Happipets – Play, Beasts, and Create. In Play mode, you’ll be able to view spellings of familiar animals and then use those letters to build them. In Beasts mode, you are presented with some made up, imaginary creatures. In Create mode, you are presented with all the letters designs that were used through the game in both Play and Beasts mode and you can use these letters to create anything you want.

Play wise, Happipets is not easy. What I mean by that is that you really need an active imagination to figure out exactly how you are supposed to build some of these animals. There were times when I would just stare at the letters and not even know where to begin. Thankfully, you can click  the help button and it will show you exactly where to put each letter. All you have to do next is resize the letters, rotate them and then drag them where they are supposed to go. The letters will automatically click in place if they are in the right spot.

After messing around with all the preset animals and creatures, you’ll want to play with the Create mode. Here is where you’ll be able to make any type of creature you can think of and it’s here where I think most children will spend the rest of their time. You can choose any of the letters used throughout the app as well as any of the backgrounds. It really makes for a very creative mode and I’m a big fan of apps that allow children to use their imaginations.

Happipets is a very creative game. It really makes you think out of the box in terms of how creative you can get creating animals from letters. It does however require quite a bit of imagination to really visualize each animal and not all children have a vivid imagination. However, it does help with this area and thankfully, the app does offer a help feature in case they get stuck on a particular animal. Now, the one area I would like to see improved upon is the number of animals shown in the play section. There are only 12 featured, but I really think they should have expanded this to at least a full 26, one for each letter in the alphabet. That way they can at least learn about 1 animal for each letter. Aside from that, the create feature is really neat and it helps extend the life of the app as they’ll be able to create whatever their imaginations can think of.
