How My Body Works is an educational app from De Agostini. As you can tell from the name of the app, it will teach you about the human body and the inner workings of how we function. It is meant for children but can be enjoyed by anyone. With the app, children will be able to learn about the Sensory System, Locomotor system, Nervous System, Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary and Lymphatic Systems, and the Reproductive System and Cells. You can pick and choose which systems to learn about so if you don’t want them to learn about the reproductive system for instance, you don’t have to download that portion.

You start off the app by choosing either the male or female body. Choosing male for instance takes you into a screen that shows a 3D male body that you can rotate around. To the right of the screen is a slider that allows you to see all the different types of bodily systems represented on the male model. To the left of the screen you’ll also see a list of these systems. Of note here is that only the Sensory system is free to download and check out. The other 7 systems can be downloaded for $1.99 each or as a package for $9.99.

For this review, I’ll go through the Sensory System as that one comes free with the app. The Sensory system includes information on all 5 senses, touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Each sense has it’s own tab that you can click on in order to learn about each individually. Each tab consists of a series of articles that children can read that talks about each of the different parts that make up those senses. For instance, for touch, they’ll learn about the skin, hair, pores dermis, and sweat glands to name a few. Some sections also include a video cartoon or a 360-degree video, but those are too few for certain systems. The Sensory system for example only has 1 video for sight while the Respiratory System has 7 videos.

You may want to note that the introduction to each section is fully narrated, but the narrator has a heavy English accent so he’ll pronounce some things a bit different than what you might be used to. Also note that none of the articles in this are narrated meaning your child must at least be able to read and be at a fairly advanced level to understand what is contained in them. What I can say though is that there is a ton of information in this app, and fairly accurate too.

My son is in 1st grade right now, but they are learning about the human body already and he went through this app and was able to follow along with it. He also recognized a bunch of what they were talking about in it so he was able to follow along and found it quite interesting.

There are a few things about the app that must be addressed though. First of all, the downloads for each system are huge.They range from 100-200mb in size and if you download all 8 of them, it will take up quite a bit of space. I also wished that each article came fully narrated as well so that the kids could follow along while reading.

Other than those small issues, How My Body Works is a very detailed, educational app. There is so much information in this app that kids can literally spend hours on it learning about the entire human body. Again, the app is free to download with the sensory system being free, but the rest will require in-app purchases so be aware of this.
