Boomtime Baseball is a nostalgic old time baseball game from developer Distinctive Developments. It takes you back to the Roaring Twenties when baseball was full of glitz and glamour. You’ll be able to play as several legendary hitters as well as play in several legendary ball parks. Unlike more traditional baseball games however, this one only deals with the homerun aspect of the game and you’ll be mainly participating in different kinds of homerun derbies. What also makes this game unique is the look and feel of the game that really takes you back to those early years of baseball.

There are several game modes included with Boomtime Baseball. There is a batting practice mode that requires no in-game money to play. Here is where you’ll hone your skills. If you want to get into the main game, you’ll have to spend a bit of money to unlock each mini game. You’ll have just enough money at first to choose either the Bulls-Eye mode or Accuracy mode. Home Run Hero mode requires more money than you have so you’ll have to play the other 2 modes in order to win enough to open this up. The last mode available is Multiplayer mode in which you’ll be able to play with others on your Game Center list. In the main menu, you’ll also find a special area called Al’s Casino. Here, you’ll be able to spend casino chips you earn and “gamble” for a chance to win more chips, extra cash, or BB tokens.

Boomtime Baseball isn’t a traditional baseball game though if you were looking to play 9 inning games. Instead, the entire game consists of just the Homerun Derby style gameplay. It’s not a traditional homerun derby either. Instead of trying to hit homers, you’ll instead be trying to hit the ball at targets. The more targets you hit consecutively, the higher your slugger meter gets. Once the slugger meter is filled up, you have a chance at hitting a homerun and  gaining tons of points.

Control in the game are pretty easy once you learn the basics. Your batter is in 3rd person view and a little blue circle appears in the middle over the plate. Tap the blue circle and drag down and either left or right to aim where you want to hit the ball. A dotted line appears to show you the arch and distance of your hit. When the pitcher pitches the ball, a second circle will appear. When both the batter’s circle and the pitcher’s circle line up, release your finger and watch the ball go soaring into the air.

Boomtime Baseball is a fun game. It’s free, but you’ll need to put in the time to unlock all the minigames, ballparks, players, and power ups. Or, if you’re lazy and don’t mind spending real money, you can always in-app purchase extra coins and cash to unlock items faster, but I usually avoid this route and just grind through the game. Either way, I say download it and give it a try if you’re a baseball fan.
