Drift Mania Championship 2 is the followup to the highly successful first game from developer Ratrod Studios. As you can tell by the title or if you are a fan of the first game, then you know that this is a racing game based on the drifting, a fairly new motor sports category that has risen in popularity over the last several years. Unlike traditional races, you’ll be mainly competing against a score board and not against actual racers in an attempt to post the highest score. In DMC2, you’ll pilot one of thirteen different high speed machines over 13 different race courses. The game features the ability to fully customize your rides with upgraded performance parts as well as the ability to fully tune your car to your liking.

One of the main features that people look for in a driving game is whether or not there are real cars in the game. Sadly, there aren’t in Drift Mania Championship 2. Even though in many of the in-game menus and screen, you’ll see photos of Nissan’s popular 240SX, Silvia S13’s, and GT-Rs, you won’t find any of them available to use in the game. Instead, you’ll find likenesses of them with such names as the Mizuchi SR-Z (GT-R), Intenza GS (Impreza), and the Tomahawk 600GT (Mustang) just to name a few. Yes, not having the real cars there doesn’t affect the stellar gameplay, but it makes it easier to get into the game if we were able to choose our favorite real life cars.

Controls in the game are “easy” to learn, however controlling your car is a whole other issue. You really need to get in some serious practice in order to be good at this game. Drift Mania Championship uses both motion and tapping of the screen to control your vehicle. The right side of the screen lets you control acceleration and speed while the bottom left corner has your e-brake used to initiate a drift. Turn by tilting your device left or right to control your drift angle. The controls are simple enough, but controlling your vehicle is difficult. You have to really be aware of how much your tilt your device and how fast you are going into a turn in order to pull the proper drift and that takes a ton of practice. It’s frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be drifting like a pro. It just takes practice.

Drift Mania Championship 2 is also highly customizable. There are tons of custom parts and upgrades available as your progress through the game. You also unlock more cars as you play along with more tracks to race on. The only problem with the unlocking system however is that the some of the new tracks require completion of  achievement to open. This can be a problem for those who might not be very good at the game, but still want to enjoy it. If you can’t unlock achievements, you can’t unlock the new tracks.

Other than that issue, I really love this game. Even though the game doesn’t use real cars, they are still pretty cool looking. Modding them takes the game to another level, though its not really necessary for you to do this to enjoy the game. I also like the fact that the game now supports the larger iPhone 5 screen which means more area of the track can be seen without your thumbs blocking the way. Again, learning how to drift can be frustrating at first, but once you do learn how to do it, the game is quite fun to play.
