iTrace v1.0.1 for iPad Review

itrace_iconIf you child is just learning how to write their ABC’s and 123’s, you might want to give the app, iTrace a try. By Elately iTrace, the app is a handwriting learning app that will teach young children interactively. With iTrace, children will be able to learn how to write both upper case and lower case letters as well as numbers, words, and their own name. It even allows for both left-handed and right-handed children. To keep things interesting, iTrace has a reward system that will reward players for their continued involvement with the app.

I’ll start this off first by saying that iTrace is a beautifully designed app with colorful UI elements that are also easy to use and understand. Since it’s an iPad only app, all the buttons are huge which is great for children. Other elements that are welcome are full audio introductions of everything they are learning to write as well as children friendly background music. All interactive elements are also animated which will show children exactly what to do so they can mimic it correctly.

Lessons are fairly straight forward. For instance, click on the upper case alphabets lesson and it will open up the “book” to reveal all the letters. You can start with “a” or any of the other letters. A new page in the book will open up with the letter. An animation of a hand holding a pen will show up and teach you exactly how to write the letter along with a dotted line that they can follow. For each time they successfully write the letter, they will receive 1 star. iTrace makes you do the lesson three times as repetition helps them learn. After that, it will give an example object that starts with that letter and then follow that up with a short mini game where you find the object. Now, the really neat thing about iTrace is that it keeps a record of each lesson that you can view in each child’s profile. It shows the date they took the lesson and how they did in it. It’s very neat and you can see how they improve their handwriting each time they take it and compare it with past attempts. That’s just an example of how the lessons will be and in my opinion, it’s very effective.

iTrace is a very good handwriting app. It’s one of the better ones I’ve seen with a very well thought out interface that makes it easy for children to use as well as very good, colorful graphics. Like most apps of this type, I do recommend getting a good stylus for children to use as when they get to school, they’ll be using writing tools to learn and not their fingers. Overall, love iTrace and highly recommend it for parents who want a good app that their children can practice handwriting with.

iTrace is available now in the App Store for $3.99. It is compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later.
