Matchbook – All Your Favorite Places in One App [iOS Review]

matchbook_iconMatchbook is a location app that helps you remember all your favorite places. Yes, you can do that with Foursquare but Matchbook allows you to do it without the whole social aspect of most location apps getting in the way. Matchbook allows you to privately keep track of all the places you’ve been as well as all the places you want to try. Saved locations can be organized using tags as well as you having the ability to add notes and photos to each location so you can better remember them.

The app is super easy to use thanks to it’s simple and beautiful UI. Basically you just tap the + button at the top corner to add a new location. Location data is provided by Foursquare so most locations you try to search for should be available. You can either search a place by its name or search via nearby places. If a place can not be found, you have the option of adding it.

Once you find the place you want to add, tap on it to open up the location. From here you can bookmark it as a place you love or a place you want to try. You can also add tags to better organize it later as well as notes about the place you want to remember and photos as well. This all allows you to better remember why you love the place or why you want to try it.

As you add new places, they will all show up in your bookmarks. They can be sorted by place, recent, or alphabetical. Sorting by place is near because you can see only the places that are near where you are. You can even view all your bookmarks on a map to see which place you might be closest to.

Because this app isn’t built heavily on social like Foursquare is, all your favorite locations are kept private unless you want to share them. That means you can make any notes you want or add any photos you want and they are all kept private. No one will know where you are unless you want them too.

Matchbook is a neat little app. I use Foursquare daily so Matchbook is a bit redundant for me, but I can definitely see myself using it if I were not on Foursquare. You can use it as a kind of location scrapbook for yourself and add information and photos about your favorite places. I know there are times when I’ve been to a restaurant and can’t remember what was the last thing I ate. With this, you can as well as any other little notes you want to leave for yourself. If you want to be social, you can also email or text a friend about a place or even broadcast it to Facebook or Twitter. I just like it because it’s a simple way to remember all the places you’ve been and places you want to go.
