Ness – Recommending Great Food Nearby (iOS App Review)

ness_iconIf you’re the type who likes to try new foods or new restaurants, you probably have a few food recommendation apps already installed on your phone. They probably have served you well on your food adventures, but there’s always room for one more, right? Why not check out Ness from Ness Computing? Ness instantly recommends restaurants based on the kinds of places you like, what you’re in the mood for, and where you are. Not only that, Ness looks really good dishing out recommendations.

I’ve actually been using Ness for quite some time but I figured it finally warranted a post from me as I think it’s one of the better food recommending apps out there. One of the defining features of Ness for me is just how quickly it can find and recommend places you can check out. It takes into consideration your location and time of day and generates the appropriate list of restaurants near you and it does this in a matter of seconds. Not only that, it considers all the categories you predetermined that you liked and disliked and factors that into its results.

Of course you don’t have to go by their recommendations and you can actually set your own guidelines easily. On the top bar are 3 buttons you can use to set your own parameters. You can select what type of foods to find and whether or not you want casual or upscale dining, the when (so if you want to search dinner for instance instead of lunch), and the where (if you are going to be somewhere else later and want to search before you get there). All this makes for a rather robust app.

Once the recommendations pop up, you can tap on each card to view detailed info about the restaurants such as the rating, reviews, photos, and even the menu. If you swipe up on a card, you can quickly get directions, make a reservation through Open Table, mail or message the card to yourself or others, and also call the restaurant directly. What I really like though is that you can get a good, quick glance at each restaurant thanks to a very detailed summary on each card. You get a quick rating among users, a large photo of once of their dishes, a small review if there is one, what the pricing is like, and how far away it is from your current location.

I love using Ness. It’s a quick way of finding which restaurants are around your current location with lots of information about each one located within. It’s like using Yelp, but much better looking and easier to use. Not only that, Ness takes all your likes and ratings into consideration when giving you recommendations. Of course as you use the app more and review more and more places, the app gets smarter and smarter on its recommendations to you. That makes it more personal. To me though, I’ve always just loved how Ness looked and how fast it brings up all the nearby restaurants. You will however need to create a Ness account in order to use it properly, but you can do that via email or with Facebook if you prefer.
