Did you ever collect stamps as a child? Stamp collecting just doesn’t seem as popular as it used to be and that could be because these days, most of our “mail” is sent electronically with no need for stamps. This is a bit sad really because there is a lot of history that can be explored with stamp collecting and if your kids weren’t doing it before, they probably won’t start any time soon. With that said, 99 Stamps is nostalgic stamp collecting app that revisits many historically significant stamps that not only allows you to view each stamp in high-quality HD, but also gives a snippet of historical information relevant to the stamp or the area the stamp would have been purchased in.
The version of the app I downloaded contained one free collection of stamps, which is the Christmas Collection. There are other collections that can be unlocked via in-app purchasing, but this review is based on the one free book. The Christmas Collection contains 99 stamps, hence the name of the app. Each one is fully reproduced to their exact color, shape, and art work making them quite accurate. Stamps can be tapped on for a closer inspection as well giving vital information such as when the stamp was issued and some historical information about it. The app is beautifully organized and it’s actually quite lovely being able to view stamps in this fashion.
Even if you aren’t a stamp collector or care about stamps, this app appeals to the art lover in me. Many of the stamps feature gorgeous art work and it’s really neat looking at the way different parts of the world interpret the same subject matter. That’s probably the coolest part 99 Stamps, the fact that you can see how culturally different we all are in the world yet we share many of the same ideals.

We’ve been using Qollector for the iPad for their collection. They enjoy taking pictures and noting where they discovered the stamp. I’ve started to include the prices to teach them about different countries and money.
