Highrise City Review – 20 Minutes of Gameplay

Highrise City

Highrise City is a modern twist to the traditional city building sim and management genre. Developed by FourExo Entertainment and Deck13 Spotlight, Highrise City is a game that took years to complete with lots of input and updates in its two years in Early Access. Highrise City claims to be “the next evolution of city simulations” and offers “a modern take on the genre enriched with a complex resource-based economy system”. Does it live up to its promises? Let’s find out.

Highrise City is more than a traditional city builder. It also incorporates elements from economy and resource management simulations, making it a hybrid of two genres. You don’t just place buildings and roads in your city, you also have to produce and distribute various resources, such as food, water, electricity, goods, and services. You have to balance the supply and demand of your citizens, as well as trade with other cities and regions. You also have to research new technologies, enact laws, and deal with events and disasters that affect your city.

The game offers a lot of depth and challenge for those who enjoy micromanaging every aspect of their city. You have to plan ahead and build efficient supply chains, as well as optimize your production and consumption. You have to keep an eye on your budget and income, as well as your environmental impact and happiness levels. You have to deal with traffic congestion, pollution, crime, fires, riots, and more. The game does not hold your hand or give you easy solutions. You have to figure out everything on your own, or consult the in-game wiki for some guidance.

However, if you’re new to city building or economy management, the game can be quite daunting. Luckily, there is a handy tutorial right at the start of the game which I highly suggest going through. It will at least show you the very basics of how to start a city and what you need to do to begin.

Overall, Highrise City is a promising game that offers a new spin on city simulations and tycoon games. It combines two genres in new and interesting ways, creating a complex and challenging gameplay experience. It gives you a lot of depth and freedom to create your own living and breathing metropolis. If you are a fan of city builders and economy simulations, you should definitely check out Highrise City on Steam.
