Skullcandy Rail ANC Review

We’re back with another set of earbuds from Skullcandy, the Skullcandy Rail ANC. These are their top-of-the-line earbuds that combine all of their top tech loaded into a tiny package. Features such as a 4-mic digital active noise canceling system, a wireless charging case, multipoint pairing, and more. There’s even the inclusion of Tile Finding Technology so you’ll never lose your earbuds again.

DESIGN

The Skullcandy Rail ANC looks very much like the other Skullcandy earbuds we’ve looked at previously and pretty much consists of a compact earbud with extended mics that point downwards. It’s a familiar yet comfortable design that works. These are also very smooth and curvy with no sharp edges and I love the combination of the matte black plastic and the transparent plastic. The transparent part lets you see some of the inner components which is pretty neat looking.

The charging case has a fairly generic look that sort of looks like an Apple AirPods case, except it’s black. It does use a combination of matte and shiny plastics, but other than that, it’s pretty bland. On the plus side, it does charge via a USB-C cable or you can charge it wirelessly. Aside from that, the cases on the Dime 3 and EcoBuds were way more interesting to look at than these are.

FEATURES

The Skullcandy Rail ANC is filled to the brim with Skullcandy’s top tech. The spec sheet is quite long and impressive and features the following:

  • 7-10 hours of playtime per charge, with an additional 20-28 hours from the charging case depending on if ANC is on or off
  • Wireless Charging Case
  • Multipoint pairing
  • 4 Clear Voice Smart Mics
  • Adjustable Stay-Aware Modes
  • Preset and Custom EQ Modes
  • Touch Controls
  • Sidetone
  • Bluetooth v5.2
  • Hands-Free Voice Controls
  • Personal Sound by Mimi
  • Sweat and Water Resistant
  • Tile Finding Technology
  • Spotify Tap

There’s also a companion app, Skull-IQ that you’ll want to download for firmware updates and custom settings for the Skullcandy Rail ANC. You might have also noticed the inclusion of Tile Finding Technology which lets you find your earbuds if you misplace them. For that, you’ll also need to download the Tile app to make use of it.

EXPERIENCE

While I might have complained a bit about how boring these look, there’s nothing to complain about when it comes to performance. The Skullcandy Rail ANC fits amazingly and offers really great passive noise isolation. In combination with the ANC, you can barely hear anything around you when you’re playing music. However, you can quickly enable Stay-Aware to hear what’s going on around you.

In terms of sound quality, these sound really good with distinct highs and lows. The vocals are very clear and the bass is pretty deep. They sounded pretty good with every genre of music I threw at them.

Aside from the sound, I do enjoy not having to plug these in to charge and just throwing them on my wireless charger. I also like that it comes with Tile and I can find them if I misplace them somewhere, which is something that often happens with something so small. I also like that I can use these independently of each other.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Despite not being as visually interesting as some of their other products, the Skullcandy Rail ANC is a solid performer with tons of top-tier features. They sound great, are really comfortable, and the case at least is still small enough to carry around in your pocket. My favorite features have to be the wireless case, Tile inclusion, long playtime, and customization via the Skull IQ app.

For the price, you really can’t beat what the Skullcandy Rail ANC provides. There’s a lot of bang for the buck here and I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
