Skullcandy ICON ANC On-Ear Headphones Review

Skullcandy ICON ANC

After almost 20 years since it’s original release, Skullcandy has reintroduced one of its original lines with the new Skullcandy Icon ANC. The new Icon ANC is better in every way with updated active noise canceling, sweat and water resistance, up to 60 hours of battery life, improved looks, updated audio, and more.

DESIGN

Skullcandy did quite a good job designing the new Icon ANC. The overall design is very clean and modern. On the black pair that we got, the splash of yellow gives it a distinct look and a bit of fun.

The headband is made of metal, but the top has this suede-like material on it with a fabric-lined cushion. The hinges are made of metal, too. The ear cup section, however, seems to be made of plastic, but it doesn’t look cheap and has a nice matte black finish. The Skullcandy logo on both ear cups is done up in a glossy black finish and looks great against the matte black.

Lastly, I like the way they designed the button controls on the Icon ANC. They look a bit like enlarged watch buttons, which is quite unique and unlike anything I’ve seen before.

SPECS

While some headphones just look good to hide their lack of specs and performance, the Skullcandy Icon ANC can back up its good looks. You’re looking at the following in terms of specs:

  • Up to 60 hours of battery life life
  • IPX4 Sweat/Water Resistence
  • Stay-Aware Mode
  • Multipoint Pairing
  • Active Noice Canceling
  • Personal Audio by Mimi
  • Google FAst PAir
  • Clear Voice Smart Mic
  • Custom EQ Mode
  • Low Latency Audio
  • Bluetooth 5.3 LE Audio
  • Spotify Tap Integration
  • Active Voice Assistence
  • Collapsible Design with Included Carrying Case

EXPERIENCE

While on-ear headphones aren’t my favorite, the Skullcandy Icon ANC is surprisingly comfortable. The ear cups are soft and supple and the headband allows for a good amount of range where it doesn’t feel overly tight on your head. I should note that you can adjust the height of the headband as well to adjust comfort and sizing.

In terms of audio quality, the Icon ANC sound great! I know most people these days prefer the convenience of earbuds, but they honestly don’t come close to what you get with headphones. Because of the much larger 40mm drivers, you get amazing highs and deep lows from the bass.

Controlling the Icon ANC is also really simple, thanks to the two buttons. One button is only for power, mute, and ANC modes, while the other is a combo button/joystick. This one can control volume, music playback, and more.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The original SkullCandy Icon was an interestingly styled headphone that made it stand out in the crowd. However, the new Skullcandy Icon ANC looks so much better. It has a much more modern look while still keeping some of the design cues from the original. I love the way the new buttons look and the fact that the design is collapsible for easy storage.

Aside from the great looks, the sound quality is amazing so you’ll definitely be happy with these if you decide to pick them up.
