SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5 and PC Review

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5

SanDisk is a well-known name in the world of portable storage solutions. They’ve been around for decades and make thumb drives, SSDs, and even RAM. While they’re known for their computer upgrades, they also make gaming console upgrades that increase storage capacity. For instance, the PlayStation 5 from the factory only has 825GB of storage. SanDisk now has the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for the PS5 and PC. This will add another 1TB of storage for your PS5 and doesn’t require any modifications to your console.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD features a design that is both modern and rugged. The white with blue accents match the normal PS5 color scheme, while the silicone skin adds shock protection. The unit is rated IP65 for water and dust resistance and can survive up to a 3-meter drop. While I don’t really like silicone, at lease it’s white here and doesn’t show dust like black does.

As for performance, you’re looking at 1000MB/s sequential read performance. Connection is via USB 3.2 Gen 2 through a USB-C port and will need to be connected to the PS5’s USB-C (SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps) port on the front. This is completely plug-and-play and doesn’t require opening up your PS5 like other storage expansion options.

I should point out that even though you’re able to store games on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, you won’t be able to run them. That’s because the PS5 only allows you to run games from the internal SSD. That’s the only real downside I see to this. However, this is great for archiving games you might not play too often, and transfer speeds are pretty quick. Also, this is a much better solution than deleting a game to make space and then having to download it again if you want to play it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you’re not brave enough to attempt an internal SSD swap in your PlayStation 5, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD unit makes it easy to add more storage by just plugging it into your console. While this isn’t as direct as a full internal storage swap and has its limitations, it’s still a much better solution than not having extra storage. You can add an additional 1-2TB, depending on the model you pick, and you won’t have to worry about running out of space again.
