First Impressions: Apple’s iPhone 4

Yesterday evening, my brother received his iPhone 4 pre-order a day ahead of launch. Me on the other hand will not be getting an iPhone 4 until late this year due to the fact that I’m still on contract and don’t feel like paying more for an iPhone than I need too.Well, this morning I finally got to check out the new iPhone 4 and I must say, I’m pretty impressed with the over all feel and build quality of the phone.

The iPhone 4 is solid. There is a certain heftiness to it that just wasn’t seen in the previous generations of the iPhone. It is quite heavy in your palms and feels like its very dense. The phone itself is really much smaller than the previous iPhones as well where it does look much thinner and the phone itself also seems to a bit narrower. The new metal and glass construction gives it a feel that previous iPhones just didn’t have. When compared with the previous iPhones, all others just look like toys compared to the iPhone 4. The new construction also makes the phone seem unbreakable, even though the glass front and back tells me otherwise. The new iOS4 isn’t too much different from the previous iOS versions. On the iPhone 4 though, it is very speedy thanks to the A4 processor and there is absolutely no lag at all. I’ll need to test out some apps on it but so far, it is very fast and responsive. Also, you can’t talk about the new iPhone 4 without mentioning the gorgeous new Retina Display. The new display really is as clear as they say it is and unless you are really looking, you honestly can not see the individual pixels. It is like looking at a magazine page or a photo.

I’ll have to say that this is by far Apple’s best work so far on the iPhone and dare I say it’s probably the best looking phones out on the market right now. If you know me well enough, you would know that I’ve always been pretty anti-iPhone. I’ve always thought of the iPhone as a half ass phone that only got popular because of band wagon riders who thought it was “cool” or “hip” to own an iPhone. Well, with the iPhone 4, I officially change my position and admit that this time, Apple has done it right and built a phone that is what I consider to be the best made touch phone out there that phone manufacturers should now use as the gold standard for phones. I’ve always been a BlackBerry user and love what my BlackBerry does but after seeing the new iPhone 4 in person, I’m seriously considering making the switch finally over to an iPhone.
