Review: Cut the Rope Lite (iOS)

Chillingo this week released a new game developed by Zeptolab called Cut the Rope. If you take a look at the top apps in the App Store right now, Cut the Rope is already at the top of the charts along with the free to try version, Cut the Rope Lite. Today, we are going to review Cut the Rope Lite since that will be the version most people will try out first.

In Cut the Rope Lite, you are given a mysterious package containing a little green monster. The goal of the game is to feed candy to this creature, Om Nom. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong. The candy is being suspended from ropes that you must cut in order to direct the candy into Om Nom’s mouth. The game is very physics heavy as gravity plays a large part in the game but it is not a hard game to pick up after completing the first few tutorial levels.

Cut the Rope Lite is one of the more creative games I’ve seen lately on iOS. I really enjoy games like this that require some a fair amount of thought and challenges. The goal of course is to get the candy to Om Nom but there is a side challenge of collecting all the stars in a given level while trying to complete your task. That is a nice added challenge that makes each level that much harder. The difficulty of each following level also increases as there are other objects to interact with besides just cutting the rope. There are bubbles you can use, air blowers, and these devices that automatically tie strings to your candy as it passes near them. There are even enemies that you must worry about as well who will try to eat the candy before it gets to Om Nom.

Cut the Rope Lite is GameCenter enhanced so you can track all of your achievements on GameCenter. It also has Chillingo’s own Crystal service built in as well for those who don’t have GameCenter but still want to track their achievements and friends who are playing the game.

Zeptolab has certainly created a winner here with Cut the Rope Lite. Not only are the levels challenging, they are very creatively designed and once you start playing, its impossible to stop. The only reason I stopped was because Cut the Rope Lite ends at 18 levels before it asks if you want to purchase the full version. The full version is only 99 cents so I think it’s definitely worth the price to buy the full version.

Final Thoughts

Cut the Rope Lite only gives you 2 packages you can play which consists of 18 levels total. There is just enough to give you a small taste of what is included in the full retail version which contains many more levels and challenges. If you’re a fan of physics based games that are challenging, Cut the Rope fits the bill. The graphics are great, the sound is perfectly fits the mood and style of the game, and the challenge is definitely there.I’m just sorry it ended at 18 levels. Guess this means I need to buy the full retail version now.

Cut the Rope Lite is available now in the App store for free to try while the full version is 99 cents. You can pick up the free version here.
