Review: Cut the Rope (iOS)

Earlier in the week I did a review for Chillingo’s Cut the Rope Lite. Well, I was so impressed with the game that minutes after posting the review, I bought the full version of it for 99 cents. It really is that addicting. After finishing the 18 level teaser in the Lite version, I had to continue playing the rest of the game in the full version. If you haven’t read the original review for the Lite version, I’ll be recapping it here as most of that review applies to the full version.

Chillingo this week released a new game developed by Zeptolab called Cut the Rope. If you take a look at the top apps in the App Store right now, Cut the Rope is already at the top of the charts right above Angry Birds. That’s no small feat as Angry Birds was probably one of the best games in the App Store.

In Cut the Rope, you are given a mysterious package containing a little green monster. The goal of the game is to feed candy to this creature, whose name is Om Nom. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong. The candy is being suspended from ropes that you must cut in order to direct the candy into Om Nom’s mouth. The game is very physics heavy as gravity plays a large part in the game but it is not a hard game to pick up after completing the first few tutorial levels. In fact, even my 4 year old son was able to play the game after teaching him the basics.

Cut the Rope is one of the more creative games I’ve seen lately on iOS. I really enjoy games like this that require some a fair amount of thought and challenges. The goal of course is to get the candy to Om Nom but there is a side challenge of collecting all the stars in a given level while trying to complete your task. That is a nice added challenge that makes each level that much harder. The difficulty of each level after also increases as there are other objects to interact with besides just cutting the rope. There are bubbles you can use, air blowers, etc. There are even enemies that you must worry about as well who will try to eat the candy before it gets to Om Nom. I found myself playing each level over and over again until I got all 3 stars.

Cut the Rope is GameCenter enhanced so you can track all of your achievements on GameCenter. It also has Chillingo’s own Crystal service built in as well for those who don’t have GameCenter but still want to track their achievements and friends who are playing the game.

Final Thoughts

Zeptolab has certainly created a winner here with Cut the Rope. Not only are the levels challenging, they are very creatively designed and once you start playing, its impossible to stop. The full version is only 99 cents so I think it’s definitely worth the price to buy the full version. If you’re a fan of physics based games that are challenging, Cut the Rope fits the bill. The graphics are great, the sound is perfectly fits the mood and style of the game, and the challenge is definitely there. With 100 challenging levels and stars to collect, Cut the Rope is sure to keep you occupied for quite a long time. Chillingo even promises to add more levels in the future.

Cut the Rope is available now in the App store for 99 cents here.

A mysterious package has arrived, and the creature inside has only one request…CANDY! Help get the candy to Om Nom, the adorable monster, in this highly innovative and addictive puzzle game. Combining outstanding physics, devilishly tricky levels, and bright colorful visuals, Cut the Rope is one of the most original and fun-filled games on the App Store.

IT’S KNOT GONNA BE A BREEZE
In Cut the Rope you don’t just need to feed Om Nom, in order to get maximum points you will also need to collect three golden stars in each stage. Some are easy, some are deviously difficult; you’re going to have to use your head to get them all-but be quick, some of these stars don’t hang around forever! Dodge jagged spikes that smash your candy to bits, and look out for sneaky spiders intent on having Om Nom’s treat all for themselves!

STAR PLAYER
Use a variety of special tools in your effort to get Om Nom his candy. Blow candy around in bubbles using special air pumps, catapult your candy across the screen to get to those hard to reach stars, use hidden ropes and special pulleys in your effort to get every star there is!

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, INSIDE THE BOX
Easy to learn and intuitive to play, Cut the Rope is hard to put down. As you progress, Om Nom will jump from one box to another, with more levels to get through. With each new box contains new and even more challenging stars and obstacles, can you make it to the end?
