Indie developer Grid Monsters will be releasing a new game this month called Hungry Helga. The premise of the game is so strange that I’m actually very curious in seeing how this game plays. Basically you are the captain of a viking vessel with your viking woman. You must keep her happy by keeping her fat. If she’s not happy, she throws a fit and your ship gets destroyed. How weird is that?!? It’s story is so strange but it really caught my attention. The graphics for this Hungry Helga also look really good. Sometimes indie developers have the most off the wall ideas but often times, they have the most creative games.
Press Release
San Diego, CA – October 11, 2010 – Hungry Helga will set sail this October from indie game developer, Grid Monsters. Hungry Helga is a fast-paced action game for the iPad and iPhone that tests a player’s ability to keep a demanding Viking woman happy. It’s no easy feat, but her siren song will keep players coming back for more.
Hungry Helga features beautiful graphics from award-winning artist, Colus Havenga, and original music from award-winning musician, Matthew Gair.
Players will assume the role of Captain Kjirk, whose sole purpose in life is to keep Helga fat and happy by feeding her fish. If Helga doesn’t get fed fast enough, she’ll throw a fit that will quickly destroy Kjirk’s ship, ending the game.

How Do You Keep a Hungry Viking Woman Happy?
Players tap on the screen to fire cannonballs at the fish. Once the fish float to the surface, players can move the ship over them by tilting their device or swiping the boat. When the boat reaches the fish, the first mate will automatically scoop them into Helga’s mouth. While the game starts out easy to let players get used to the controls and allow casual gamers to get into the game, over time the fish get harder to kill requiring the player to bomb more strategically. Sharks and seagulls will compete with the player for the limited supply of fish and icebergs will prevent the ship from moving until they’ve been destroyed. Hardcore gamers can try to maximize their score even on earlier rounds by increasing their skill bonus:
the rate that Helga is being fed.Once Helga has eaten enough, she reaches a state of nirvana and can call on the gods for assistance.
Players can tap Helga’s spinning halo to activate one of her unique superpowers. The powers range from bolts of lightning to beams of sunlight strong enough to boil the fish out of the water.
If Helga doesn’t get fed, she gets skinnier and angrier, eventually throwing a fit that will destroy and sink Kjirk’s boat.
“It reminds me of my home life.” said a local gamer, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal from his significant other.
