Review: BIG BAD Flower v1.0 (iOS)

BIG BAD Flower is a casual game by developer BIG BAD BRUSH. The story of BIG BAD Flower goes a little something like this, you’ve created this evil flower whose sole purpose is to dominate the world. Foes will try to stop you, but with the power of the bubble, you will blow away those enemies. Nothing will stand in your way. Strange concept right?

While the story of BIG BAD Flower might be completely off the wall, the gameplay itself is very straight forward. The game itself can be played with just your one thumb. You make circles around enemies to create bubbles and then swipe your thumb across the flower to blow the enemies away. However the game does get faster as you progress so you will need to switch to the 2 thumb method – one to make circles and one to swipe, although faster players can still use the one thumb method. The game does get very hectic and chaotic during the later levels which makes it pretty intense.

BIG Bad Flower is definitely unique. It’s the first game of this type that I’ve played on my iPhone since getting it. It’s refreshing to see a developer come up with a new game type that doesn’t try to copy others and makes full use of the iPhone’s touch screen. This is why I love indie developers. They are not afraid to try new things as opposed to big name studios who keep cranking out the same tired games all the time. Indie developers are afraid to go beyond what is normal and aren’t afraid to get a little wacky with their games.

Final Thoughts

Underneath the strange story, BIG BAD Flower serves up a solid casual game. Chapters get more and more challenging as the pace increases with each level. The action can get quite crazy with barely any time to give your fingers a rest. The gameplay can get a bit repetitive at times but it’s still a solid game. For future updates, I’d like to see the addition of some power-ups maybe to give the game a fresh feel to it and to break up some of the repetitiveness.  I’d also like to see some kind of leaderboard as well as GameCenter support or support for any of the other gaming networks. Other than that, BIG BAD Flower offers up an amusing game that very different from some of the other games that are out in the App Store right now.

You can pick up BIG BAD Flower from the App Store now for $1.99.
