Review: ToMaCow v1.2 (iOS)

ToMaCow from mobileFlavour is a new game i was trying out last night thanks to the fact that is it free for a limited time. I’m very glad I did because it is quite an enjoyable game to play.

The story of ToMaCow goes like this from what I could gather – You are a tomato farmer who owns some cows. You are being attacked by a bunch of little aliens and must protect your cows from the horde before they capture them all. (Aliens have a fascination with cows.) To keep the aliens at bay, your farmer shoots an endless stream of tomatoes at them in order to protect your cows. That’s pretty much the whole point of the game. Weird? Yes. Fun? Very.

I’m going to start this off by saying that the whole style of the game is amazing. Who ever did all the animations for ToMaCow and all the art work for it is really good. It reminds me very much of Matt Groening and his art work and it really lends itself well to ToMaCow. The colors are also very bright and add to the overall tone of the game. It is very light-hearted and even children can play this as it is very suitable for all age groups. ToMaCow is also optimized for Retina Display so that’s a huge plus in my book.

Gameplay wise, it is very simple to play. You can either use the tilt controls or touch controls. The goal is to just shoot all the aliens with your tomato shooter and keep them away from your cows. It’s very Plants vs Zombie like but much simpler and more fast paced. The one flaw though is that there never seems to be an end or any real sense of accomplishment. The game just keeps going until they capture all your cows. Sure it gets harder and harder but there is no reward and no end. It would be nice if the developers would add GameCenter support and achievements as to give more incentive for continuing on. There are leaderboards, but I’m not really interested in comparing myself against strangers. I’d like to compare myself with friends I know.

Final Thoughts

ToMaCow is a very fun game to play. The control scheme is very easy to master as all you do is tilt your device to move the targeting circle around and once in a while you get to drag something on screen with your finger. You can however switch to a more traditional touch control scheme if you don’t like the tilt option. ToMaCow is very fast paced and never lets up for a moment. The game does drag a little due to how long the game is before you even see a boss character but it’s a great game if you want to kill some major time.

You can pick up ToMaCow in the App Store free for a limited time but after which it’ll be back to 99 cents.
