Review: Fiddme v1.5.1 (iOS)

Fiddme is a social networking app that is very similar to another app we reviewed here, Foodspotting. As you know, Foodspotting was an App Store featured app and in my opinion, Fiddme also deserves to be up there as well. It has many of the similar functions that Foodspotting has but is a bit more simplistic with its approach. Fiddme lets you post images of foods your are currently eating so that you may share them with the world. Since Fiddme is about social networking, you can have Fiddme also automatically post these to your favorite social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and Gowalla.

Fiddme allows users to share and discover new foods from around the world. Users submit images to Fiddme and rate what they are eating from from “Still Hungry” to “Awesome!” It’s a great visual representation for the rating system, one in which Foodspotting does not have. You can also caption each image with a person message. It’s very easy to use and makes posting only a few clicks away. Fiddme is also a great way to keep track of foods you have eaten and where you ate them. You don’t even need to be following any other users if that is what you want to use Fiddme for.

Fiddme is based in Israel. Unlike Foodspotting, Fiddme doesn’t quite have the number of users Foodspotting has. In fact, I couldn’t find any of my friends using Fiddme which is a shame because Fiddme is really quite good. That’s one of the downsides to Fiddme is that much of its user base is outside of the United States so discovering new foods around you is quite difficult when there are no other users around your area. It is a great app however if you want to see what people all around the world are eating.

As with most social networking apps, Fiddme fully incorporates posting to all major social networks, mainly Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and Gowalla.

The app itself is very nicely laid out. I would say that it is a tad more user friendly than Foodspotting and it definitely has a more light-hearted approach to it with its more colorful user interface. Fiddme is actually more inviting than Foodspotting is and seems to be a bit more easier to jump into.

There is however one thing I wish Fiddme would add to the app. When posting food, you are given some category choices that you can place the restaurant in. Fiddme has a wide range of categories but not every category is listed and there is no way to add a new category. Because of this, many of my entries go uncategorized. That means that when someone searches for that food, it might not show up in the search because there is no category for it. Would would be nice is if Fiddme would add a way where people can add food types that way if I look up “pizza” for instance, all food tagged as pizza would show up. That way, I wouldn’t really need to place a restaurant into a category, only the food. Because of the way it’s set up now, if I type in pizza, all pizza places show up regardless of what the food is that is being posted.

I do know however that the devs working on Fiddme are constantly working on it and I’ve been told that there will be many new features in future updates. That’s good because Fiddme has lots of potential, I just wish more people around me used it.

Final Thoughts

Both Fiddme and Foodspotting are great social networking apps for foodies. It’s really all up to personal preference when it comes to which app you would rather use. Where as Foodspotting seems like a more professional app, Fiddme is more personal and has a more casual approach for foodies. Fiddme actually seems a bit more fun to use as its more light-hearted and has a much more inviting user interface. You really can’t go wrong with either of these apps as they both do offer something different to the table.

Fiddme is available now in the App Store for free. You will need to register with the Fiddme website in order to use it however.
