Exclusion Zone, by Appular and developed by PTK Learning is a new game in the line-drawing strategy genre. The line-drawing strategy genre is quite popular now with many games appearing recently. Appular already has experience with games of this type so Exclusion Zone should at least reflect their experience.
In Exclusion Zone, you are in control of the country’s land and navel bases and must protect them from incoming swarms of enemy fighter planes and helicopters. At your disposal are missile silos you can use to fire guided missiles at the enemy. By using your finger, you draw a path to your enemy’s destruction. You must do so before they land in your base or else its game over.
Exclusion Zone is presented to you in a top down playing field. Enemy aircraft can appear from any side of the playing field so you must pay close attention to your surroundings. As enemies appear, you must draw a line from your missile silo to the planes or helicopters to destroy them. But, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Enemy aircrafts can change directions so the path you draw might end up not hitting anything causing you to lose valuable time. Missile silos also take time to reload missiles so you really need to think before you make a move. Exclusion Zone is not easy. This is probably one of the most challenging games I have played of this type but that’s a good thing because often times, I find games of this type too easy and easily lose interest after a few plays. That is not case with Exclusion Zone.
There are 5 different maps you can play on, each accessible from the start. Gameplay though remains the same on each map. There is a nice variety of different enemy aircrafts and they all behave in different ways which is cool.
Exclusion Zone is a very good addition to the line-drawing strategy genre. It provides more challenge than any game I’ve played so far of this type and may be a bit difficult for some. However, if you stick to the game and keep trying, you’ll find that Exclusion Zone is quite enjoyable and really tests your skills. It’s one of those games where no matter how bad you are at the beginning, you still want to keep playing to increase your score and skill. Exclusion Zone isn’t for everyone, but if you are looking for a challenge, you’ll definitely find it here.
Exclusion Zone is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is compatible with all iOS devices with OS 3.0 and higher.
