TGWK’s Review of “MadCap” v1.1.1 (iOS)

MadCap is a new indie game from developer iCon. In the game, you play the role of an angry chipmunk that works on a farm. While you slave away, all the other farm animals are lazily laying around not doing a thing. As a result, you can no longer accept what is going on and decide to go on a tomato throwing rampage against your fellow farm animals.

In MadCap, what you basically do as you throw tomatoes at farm animals. You do this by tapping on the tomato icon on the lower right of the screen to release a tomato from your swinging chipmunk. It sounds a bit easy, but trust me, its not. MadCap requires you to be almost pinpoint precise in order to pass the later levels. It’s a bit frustrating at times, but it’s one of those games where you still keep on trying because it’s so hard to put down. Eventually, you do it right and move on to the next level.

Audio in the game is pretty sparse. There are background sounds in each level for ambiance, but there are no sound effects at all for any of the actions. It makes the game feel almost incomplete as it’s a strange sensation playing a game these days without any sound effects. There isn’t even background music to divert your attention from the lack of sound effects. Hopefully, in future updates, they will add some sound effects to the game.

Despite the absence of audio effects and the overly challenging  accuracy MadCap requires, it’s not a bad casual game. The lack of sounds I can overlook as I play most games sometimes while waiting for appointments or in between emails so I have the volume set pretty low to begin with. As for the insane precision you need in this game, it’s not impossible as the more you play, the more you’ll get used to knowing which is the exact angle you need to hit an animal in the exact spot. It’s a lot of trial and error, but it’s not at the point where it’s overly frustrating. Children may however find the game a bit difficult to play however so I wouldn’t quite recommend buying this for them. The older kids should find it fun however but the lack of sounds might be a turn off for some.

MadCap is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
