Luxor: Amun Rising HD is the follow-up to MumboJumbo’s original game, Luxor HD. If you enjoyed playing the original, Luxor: Amun Rising is more of the same. Luxor: Amun Rising features 88 new levels with new power-ups and a new story. In the game, you must save Egypt from doom by protecting its pyramids from destruction. In actuality however, you’ll probably pay very little attention to the story and instead be concentrating on the gameplay which can be very fun. Luxor: Amun Rising is a marble matching shooting game. Chains of colored marbles roll through each level and you must shoot colored marbles at them to form matches to destroy them. Destroy all the marbles in the chain and you move on to the next level.

Some of you new to iOS may not have heard of Luxor before so I’ll compare it with another game that you might have heard of. If you’re on Facebook, PopCap recently released Zuma Blitz on it. The gameplay is very similar to Zuma Blitz. A chain of colored marbles roll on a track. It’s your job to destroy the marbles by making at least a match of 3 marbles of the same color. Obviously the more marbles you can get to match, the higher the score. You need to completely destroy the entire chain in order to win the round.

There are three modes of play in the game – adventure, survival, and practice. Adventure is where the story takes place. This is where you play through the 88 new levels. Survival mode is your typical endless mode to see how high of a score you can get and practice mode is just to practice. Most likely, you’ll never play practice mode.

Controls in the game are very easy to master. Your winged scarab is controlled with your finger. You drag it left and right to move it. To shoot a marble, you tap on the scarab. Your scarab also shows an alternate marble color you can choose and you do so by swiping down on it to switch marbles. What I really find helpful with the shooting mechanics is that they’ve included a handy guide that appears below where the marble is suppose to hit. This is real handy as sometimes with games like this, it’s hard to gauge where the marble will go.

Luxor: Amun Rising isn’t just a standard marble shooting matching game. It has power-ups. Power-ups are gained by completing 3 matches in a row. There are 9 different power-ups you can earn and each can drastically change the outcome of the current game. Power-ups however aren’t just given to you though. You have to catch them when they fall, otherwise no power-up for you.

If you want a good casual game that is fun to play and and easy to jump right into, Luxor: Amun Rising has everything you are looking for. You can play at your own pace, and once you complete the adventure mode, you can keep playing survival mode which helps extend the longevity of the game. Though with 88 levels, adventure mode should keep you busy for quite a while.
