TGWK’s Review: Toca Hair Salon v1.1 (iOS)

Toca Hair Salon is another one of those creative games from Toca Boca that is geared towards children. Like their other games, this one is highly stylized with great art, character designs, and color. In Toca Hair Salon, kids will be able to choose one of  six characters to interact with, each with plenty of hair to style and cut. The game provides you with most of the essential tools you need to create a variety of different hair styles allowing your kids to be hair stylists for a day. Having their hair cut might not be the funnest activity for children, but when the tables are turned and they become the stylists, it can make for a very fun and interesting activity for them.

Navigating around the Toca hair Salon is super easy. You start off by choosing a character to give a haircut too. At the bottom of the screen lies all your hair cutting tools. You have scissors, a comb, hair growth tonic, a blow dryer, clippers, and a vast array of different hair color dyes you can use. Each is represented with a large, clear icon so children will be able to figure out what each item does without any instruction. There’s even a camera that they can use to save their wacky creations.

As with other Toca Boca games, the art style in this game is fantastic. Each character has their own personalities and each are fully animated. They aren’t just static images. They make different faces at you depending on what hair cutting tools you use and even make sounds too. The game even features background movement based on how you tilt your screen. It’s not necessary to have this function, but its a nice little touch that really shows the type of commitment the devs made to Toca Hair Salon.

Toca Hair Salon is another hit children’s game from Toca Boca. It’s creative, fun, and different from many of the other apps out there. It’s one of those apps that isn’t just a mindless game and instead is one of those that promotes creativity. I like games like this where a child can basically play at their own pace and create basically whatever they want without any limits.

Toca Hair Salon is available now in the App Store for $1.99. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.
