FiLMiC Pro is an advanced video camera app from developer Cinegenix. Unlike the Camera app included with the iPhone that only has the most very basic of functions, FiLMiC is touted as an advanced video tool filled with power shooting features and options that go way beyond what the stock Camera app. It includes options like independent focus and exposure sampling as well as being able to lock those settings in addition to locking the white balance. This already is more than what you can do with the stock Camera app on the iPhone and that isn’t even all you can do. FiLMiC Pro has more options hidden in the settings menu.
The layout of the menus in FiLMiC Pro is easy to get used to, if not a bit cluttered. All buttons on the main screen are in easy reach of your fingers if you are holding your iPhone with 2 hands. One handed use is possible but only if you aren’t going to use any of the advanced functions, but if that were the case, you might as well just use the stock Camera app. Buried in the settings menu, you’ll be able to do things like adjust resolution, FPS (max 30), how many reticles to use, GPS tagging, framing, and more. You can even adjust the encoding and compression levels.
One of the neatest features I think is the slate function. If you’re trying to make a professional film and know you will be making lots of cuts for editing later, the slate function can be very handy. It uses film industry data fields so those who already know how to use a physical slate will be able to use this easily.
For the casual videographer, FiLMiC Pro still offers way more than the stock Camera app, even if you don’t use many of the advanced functions. For the price, it’s an inexpensive way to get lots of advanced features, many of which are well worth it. With highly customizable features and the ability to turn features on and off, FiLMiC Pro can custom suit the needs of any budding director.
