Curiosity v1.0 iOS Review – Very Curious Indeed

If you’re looking for one of the must puzzling games in history, Curiosity might just be that game. Curiosity is from the mind of Peter Molyneux and his new game studio, 22Cans. Curiosity some kind of strange social experiment in which players from all around the world are tasked with chipping away at a ginormously huge cube made up of billions and billions of tiny cubes. Seriously, it doesn’t really sound like fun at first as all you are doing is tapping away at the screen to remove blocks, but somehow, it ends up being strangely addicting and time consuming.

Like I said above, your main goal really is to just chip away at this huge cube. Nothing more, nothing less. It is comprised of billion of tiny cubes. You tap on each cube to remove them and you can gain coins along the way. The goal is to see who will become the final person to gain access to the center of the cube and discover what mystery lies within. This could take days, month, or years. Who knows. It’s a very strange game and although it just sounds like a complete waste of time, it’s very hard to put down once you’ve started.

Again, this is a social experiment of some sort so you are literally chipping away at this cube with thousands and thousands of other players at the same time. Each of them trying to outdo the other in the number of blocks removed and the amount of coins gained. I’ve noticed a lot of people using the cube as a canvas for some very creative cube art so far, but of course that ends up being destroyed by other players as is the case with many of these massive social games.

Curiosity really is quite a curious game. I mean at first there seems to be no real point to it. You gain coins, but can’t do anything with them, yet it keeps track of how many you’ve earned. There are no real stats besides the coin count and you can’t see which of your friends are playing. Yet, I find myself coming back to it whenever I have free time just to chip away at this block, and I know not why. Could it be that I’m just very curious to see what secrets this cube holds inside?

[Update] When I tested the app out earlier, I wasn’t able to click on some of the options. Now I am. There is actually a shop link that lets you spend your coins on a few things like ability to see stats and friend activity, though there is a server error that keeps me from seeing either. You can also buy tool upgrades, those some of the prices are way ridiculous, like $3 billion coins for a diamond chisel.

Curiosity is available now in the App Store for Free. It is a universal app and is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
