Words With William is an educational app from developer Shawn Nelson. The app is meant for children between the ages of 3 and 6 with the goal of teaching them to recognize and learn their letters, numbers, and shapes. The app does so by introducing them to William, an energetic little kid that will help them along their way. This app is basically for those kids just learning about their letters, numbers, and shapes and from what I’ve seen so far, it seems pretty fun and quite interactive.

The app itself is quite simple. Basically William will talk to your child and ask them to pick out whatever it is he is asking of them. For instance, he will ask them to pick out the letter B. On the right side of the screen, there will be 2 choices of say the letter B and W. If your child taps on the letter W, William will tell them that they got it wrong and will encourage them to try again. If they choose correctly, he will praise how smart they are and move on to the next set. It’s actually quite effective and I like how the developer used a child in this instead of an adult so that he will relate more with children.

A neat feature in the app though is the hidden parental settings. If you double tap the screen using 2 fingers, you will bring up the settings menu. From here you can turn on and off letters, numbers, or shapes so your child can either learn them all or specific categories. There’s also a button to restart the game or share to Facebook. Again, these settings are hidden from children and can only be accessed by adults or if they are super lucky and figure it out.

Overall, Words With William is a very cool educational app that I think kids will enjoy. I tried this out with my 2-year old and she was actually very interested in it thanks to William and his enthusiastic tone. It also helps that there is a video of him at all times and he guides you through the entire thing as if he were really there. So yes, if you are looking for a fun way to get your child to learn letters, numbers, and shapes, check out Words With William.
