I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I carry around with me more than one electronic device at a time. In fact, my bag I carry around with me is filled with gadgets that often times need recharging on a daily basis. Sometimes I forget though and find that the battery on a device I need to use is inconveniently low on power. What’s even more inconvenient is if I forget the device’s charging cable at home because not all of my devices use the same charging cable and I don’t always remember to bring them all. That brings me to the new id America CrossLink universal sync and charge cable. This one cable takes the place of 3 cables. Not only can it charge 3 different kind of devices, it also lightens my load by only having to pocket one cable.
What the CrossLink is is a 3-foot charging/sync cable that comes in a variety of colors. What makes the CrossLink different from other cables is the fact that on one end, the head has 3 different connectors on it for 3 different types of devices. It includes a 30-pin connector for Apple devices, a Lightning connector for newer Apple devices, and a Micro USB connector for almost every other device on the market. What it doesn’t have is a Mini USB connector, but lately I’ve been seeing less and less of these. If you look at the picture, the CrossLink basically is a 30-pin cable with 2 heads sticking out of the sides.
What I like about the CrossLink is that it is a flat cable which makes it much easier to roll up when not in use. It also means that it will not get all tangled up like traditional cables do. It all has a slight rubbery feel to it making it quite grippy.
As awesome as the CrossLink is, being able to take the place of 3 separate cables, I did run into a few minor issues. For starters, the Lightning connector would not fit on my iPhone 5 or iPad mini unless I removed the cases from them. Interesting enough, I’m currently using the id America Liquid case on it and it needs to be removed in order for the cable to fit correctly. This is mainly because the lightning connector on the CrossLink sits flush with the side of the connector dead instead of slightly raised up with an extender. If it was extended just a few millimeters, it would have worked without taking off my case. Same goes for the iPad mini. The same problem can be had with the Micro USB connector too when using it charge a device with a case on it, like the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, if you go nude with all your devices, you won’t have any problems whatsoever with the CrossLink.
Overall, the id America CrossLink is a great alternative to carrying around 3 different types of cables despite me having to remove my cases to use it. Luckily the cases I use are easy to remove but those who use something like a Lifeproof case will have a tough time using it. Still, as an $18 accessory, it’s very cheap and it works well. You can pick up the id America CrossLink here in black, blue, green, pink, white, and yellow.
