Edge of Twilight – Athyr Above is a 3rd person action-adventure game with a hint of RPG thrown in. This game is part of the Edge of Twilight series, and features the character of Lex, a bounty hunter with the power to venture between parallel realms, mainly that of the day and night races, Athern and Lithern. He seems to be a hybrid of both races which is why he can travel between realms. Anyways, he has been hired by Galina which I’m assuming is the Queen. She gives you the task of restoring day and night back to normal and restoring Hellayem back to normal. You learn all this and more in a rather long intro video before finally getting thrown into the main game.
I’m going to start this off by saying that one of the main negatives about the game in previous builds has been addressed by this updated version. Almost everyone hated the control scheme in the previous builds which had you taping around the screen to move Lex and also tapping and swiping to attack enemies. It also had you using two fingers to jump which ended up being highly inaccurate and a cause for much grief. Well, that’s all fixed now and the game now includes a virtual control pad giving it a more traditional feel and makes the game much more enjoyable to play. Now you have dedicated buttons for movement, attacking, jumping, and activating objects. This fixes one of the biggest problems people had with the game before.
Gameplay wise, you’ll mostly be going through different sections of a map while engaging in random battle against fairly easy to defeat enemies. The enemies aren’t what I’d call smart so defeating a whole group of enemies is a cinch as they don’t try to move out of the way really and their buddies don’t try to hard to attack you either. This means you’ll be flying through most of the levels with the only thing you really need to concentrate on is just finishing them. That’s not to say it can’t be fun. Hack and slash fans will have fun mashing away at the buttons while RPG fans will enjoy leveling up the character. Of note, there are also a few puzzler type elements thrown in for good measure.
On the graphics side of things, we are treated to fairly good introductory movie that looks pretty good for a mobile game. In game graphics are also decent with fully 3D worlds and character models. Colors are pretty dark too which lends to the darker mood and them of the game.
Overall, Edge of Twilight – Athyr Above is not a bad hack and slash game. Despite the rather long story intro, there really isn’t much of a story for the rest of the game, but the action is there. There’s a lot of hacking away but luckily, there are some other elements thrown in to break up the repetitive play. You’ll definitely be mashing the buttons quite a bit and I do highly suggest sticking to the new virtual control pad and staying clear of the original control scheme.
