Monster Jam – Rumbling Its Way Into Your Pocket (iOS App Review)

monsterjam_iconIt’s funny that there hasn’t been a game based on this property before, but now there is an official Monster Jam game featuring many of your favorite monster trucks such as Grave Digger, El Toro Loco, Maximum Destruction and Monster Mutt. This game takes the popularly huge Monster Jam franchise and shrinks it down to pocket-sized proportions. Are you ready to Monster Jam?

Monster Jam looks to bring authentic Monster Jam action on your smartphone. That means there are several game modes available based off of actual events. This includes actual stadium events, truck pulls, and a rather exaggerate hill climb event. In order to play any of these though, you’ll have to first purchase a monster truck. and that requires coins. You will start off with just enough to buy a truck. As you play, you’ll earn more coins and can start upgrading your truck for better performance, or buy another truck. It’s kind of like a monster truck RPG.

Graphically the game looks pretty good. All the monster trucks are highly detailed and accurate and the locals in which you race and compete look very good as well with lots of 3D modeling. Now monster trucks are known to be loud and that’s no different in this game. Engines roar to life with that distinct monster truck loudness along with a real kickin’ soundtrack.

Controlling your monster truck is no easy feat, and in the stadium modes, it really shows. I’m not sure if the game is meant to be like this, but controlling your monster truck is quite difficult. You tap the gas on the right of the screen and tilt your device to steer. Turning is near impossible to be accurate and it makes for a slightly aggravating experience. However, other modes like the truck pull and hill climb are far easier and more fun to play as you aren’t fighting with the tilt controls.

The only other slightly annoying part of the game is that if you have in-app purchases disabled, you’ll get a popup for it when you launch the app that just won’t go away unless you tap on it several times. I have in-apps turned off since I have kids so it’s just a bit of an inconvenience that I have to do this each time I start up the game.

Overall though, Monster Jam is a cool game for those who are fans of monster trucks. With 4 game modes available and 16 trucks available, the game has something for everyone. Monster Jam is free and kids seem to really enjoy it so check it out.
