One of the more popular genres on iOS is that of endless runners. There have been quite a few endless runners on the top 10 list and many of them are quite addicting. I’ve played my fair share of them and usually will play them for a while until I grow tired of them and then move on to the next. The latest endless runner I’m checking out is Splash Dash in which you play as Tad the frog who is trying to flee from Clementine the
Crocodile or risk become her next meal.
Splash Dash is a slightly different take on the endless running genre. Instead of running, you are instead hopping (since you are a frog) and must jump from lily pad to lily pad or to whatever else keeps you out of the water in order to avoid being eaten. Like all endless runners, there is no end. Tad just keeps hopping and hopping until you eventually mess up and either lands into the jaws of the waiting croc or into the water where again, you’ll be frog food. Like most games in this genre, you’ll be collecting coins along the way that you’ll be able to use to upgrade power ups. These power ups help you go farther which is the ultimate goal of the game, to see how far you can get.
Gameplay consists of your frog continuously jumping on its own while you tilt the devices left and right to control which direction he jumps. Just make sure to jump on something solid, it could be a lily pad, a rock, a turtle, or even bubbles. Just avoid the water. Along the way, you can use power ups to go farther, like dragonflies that zoom you along, a grasshopper that will let you jump farther, or a bird that will allow you to skip a large chunk of area.
Graphically, the game is quite good. It really does look like you are playing in some kind of really colorful swamp but the environments look pretty realistic and is as good as any of the more popular games out there. Even the character designs of the the frog, crocodile, and supporting case all looks really good too.
Splash Dash is fun. It’s a pretty good endless runner that has many of the characteristics and features people seem to like in these games. The controls are easy to learn as to not get in your way so that you can further and further each time. It does have in-app purchases, but you can collect coins as you play and should be able to unlock all the upgrades within a short amount of time. Other than that, endless runner fans should enjoy this.
