The Chub Review (iOS)

thechub_iconIt’s interesting when developers take an already existing genre and modify it a bit to create something new. Take for instance Vain Media’s new endless “Waddler” The Chub. The game plays a bit like an endless runner, except it’s broken up into levels with the main goal of each being to get The Chub to collect all the ingredients needed to create the special dish of each level and to ultimately eat it.

The game uses tilt controls over taps so you’ll be able to play this game entirely one handed. It’s a top down game so you’ll just need to tilt your device left or right to move The Chub in the direction you want him to. He can move in almost a 180-degree field but will still continuously move forward automatically. There are some levels however that will have gameplay mechanics in place that will allow The Chub to bounce backwards allowing you to pick up ingredients you may have missed, but only to a certain extent. This allows for some interesting gameplay as you have to think about what items you want him to collect and which you can go back and collect again when missed.

Of course that’s not the only challenge presented to you. There are also obstacles that need to be avoided such as sharp cutting objects and burning coals scattered around the level that can put an end to your run.

Graphically, the game doesn’t look too bad. There are some rather interesting character design and art on the menu and cut screen but for the gameplay graphics, they are just okay. By okay, I mean that the graphics are just average and will not turn you off from playing. They are good to a point but isn’t really anything that will grab your attention where you’ll be praising how awesome it looks.

The Chub is actually quite a challenging game and it different from most usual endless runner type games. It’s an interesting concept with a rather strange storyline attached to it, but it’s fun. The only real problem I had with the game itself was mainly tied to the ads that popped up. After dismissing an ad, the game would sometimes just freeze and become unresponsive. I would have to exit and close the app completely and restart it before I could play again.
