Drone: Shadow Strike Review on iOS

drone_iconIt’s been a long time since I’ve played a good Call of Duty game, but one of my favorite parts in those games were when you got to take control of a drone and lay waste to unsuspecting soldiers or when you got control of an AC-130 gunship and got to do the same. These were gameplay elements that were completely different from the FPS aspect of the main game that they always stood out more to me for some reason. If you ever thought that these parts of the game would be well suited for mobile devices, then you’re not alone because there have been several devs who thought the same. For instance, Drone: Shadow Strike is just such a game in which you take control of various military drones engaging on covert military missions.

What makes Drone: Shadow Strike fun for me is that the entire game is that the whole game is from the perspective of your drone. These were some of my favorite parts of console military games and now I can play just that on my mobile phone. The game isn’t just straight up action though. There are RPG like elements to it where you gain money and XP from carrying out missions and then spend that cash on upgraded weapons, armor, and drones. And though this game follows a free-to-play model where there are in-app purchases, you don’t ever really need to use them as you can unlock everything by just playing the game.

Graphically, its a great looking game. Most of the action is seen through a FLIR (Forward looking Infrared) camera. This gives the game a very military authentic look. Menus are a bit more colorful an lively but overall, they did a great job here with the UI and making things look like you are actually in control of a sophisticated military drone.

Drone: Shadow Strike however isn’t going to be for everyone, despite how good this game is. It’s made for a specific type of gamer, mainly those that like action games or military simulations. I like playing those types of games too so I do enjoy this one. I’ve always like the drone sequences in console war games so being able to play something similar to that on my mobile phone is certain welcome.
