There was a time when Nintendo said that they would absolutely never bring any of their franchises to mobile devices, considering they have so much invested in their line of portable gaming machines. Things seem to have changed as just recently, a Pokemon Trading Card game was released for the iPad and now there is Camp Pokemon for both iPhone and iPad devices. Pokemon is huge for Nintendo so it’s a bit surprising that they are releasing it on other platforms, but it also does make sense if these smaller Pokemon titles draw in new fans who would in turn buy a new 3DS along with whatever Pokemon game is currently out. Camp Pokemon seems like such a title as it’s geared primarily towards children who have maybe seen a Pokemon cartoon but might not have ever played any of the Pokemon games.
The gameplay experience in Camp Pokemon is much different than what you’ll find in the real Pokemon games. Instead, Camp Pokemon features a small series of mini games featuring some of your favorite Pokemon. Games include Poke Ball Throw, Find the Pokemon, Pokemon Evolution, Photo Booth, Battle Matchups, and Pokemon in Focus. These are all simple games meant to familiarize young players with different Pokemon types, how to catch Pokemon, and how to recognize Pokemon and their many evolutionary types.
For instance, one activity has you guessing which Pokemon it is based on a shadow or which Pokemon belongs in a specific evolutionary chain. Again, it’s mainly just to familiarize young players with the world of Pokemon. As a kids game, it’s really not bad at all. The game are very simple, but again, I think the main point is to just get young players interested in Pokemon in hopes that they will ask their parents to buy the real version on the 3DS.
I do recommend Camp Pokemon. It’s free with no in-apps and it’s very feature rich for a free game. The graphics are very well done as is the entire user interface and the whole atmosphere of the game. It is very colorful and very Pokemon-ish. This has many games that will appeal to younger children and they’re sure to love it if they love Pokemon.
