Sometimes a game comes along that completely catches you by surprise, either with its unique gamepaly or its visual style. In the case of Plastiland by FreshGem and Zillion Whales, it was the visual style that completely blew me away. You see, Plastiland is completely made up of actual clay models, meaning everything from the characters to the actual levels themselves were all first modeled in clay. That gives Plastiland a completely different look from many of the games out there right now. Of course looks aren’t everything and you’ll be happy to discover that the gameplay here is actually very solid as well.
The thing that stands out the most about Plastiland is the visual style the game employes. According to the devs, everything is modeled using real clay, shot, and then edited on the computer. Because there is no CGI modeling, the use of real materials gives Plastiland a rather unique not found in many games these days. The only other game I can remember using clay was that of Clay Fighter, which was way back in 1994, and even that wasn’t entirely made of clay. This is a very pretty and unique game that shouldn’t be overlooked.
As for the gameplay, Plastiland is very reminiscent of the game Lemmings. Plastiballs come out of one end of the level and you must guide them safely to the other. You have a variety of objects you can transform the plastiballs into to help you reach your goal. Don’t worry about not knowing how to play because the game actually has a very thorough tutorial world you can play through that will teach you how to use every transformation.
Once you do learn how to play, it’s mainly a matter of figuring out what route to take to the exit and how to get there. Again, the game is very much like Lemmings in what you have to do so if you’ve played Lemmings before, you should have no problem playing this.
Plastiland is a really nice homage to Lemmings. The gameplay is very similar but Plastiland has a much nicer look to it thanks to its unique visual style. It’s amazing that the devs spent over a year creating this game because everything had to me modeled in clay. It really makes you appreciate the effort that went into it.
