Fallout Shelter Review [iOS]

falloutshelter_iconUnless you’ve been living in a self contained vault with zero access to the outside world (see what I did there?), you probably know that Bethesda is hard at work on a new Fallout game. To whet your appetite during the wait, Bethesda released a mobile Fallout game called Fallout Shelter. Fallout Shelter is a ‘base building’ game in which you must construct a self contained Vault that will house survivors, produce food, water, and electricity, and be able to increase population.

Much of the game consists of building rooms that provide things like power, water, food, Stimpaks, and Radaways. None of these things get produced on their own however so you will need dwellers to work in these rooms. At first, random dwellers will come knocking on your vault door for a place in your society. You decide where to assign them and what their role will be. Slowly you build up your vault with new types of rooms and resource generators with the caps you collect. Your population too will also need to grow in order for your vault to remain self sustaining.

Aside from building room and managing resources, there really isn’t all that much action to be had. Sure there are random disasters and bandit raids, but for the most part, your dwellers handle things on their own with very little input from you. Once in a while you’ll have to assign a dweller to take care of things, but it doesn’t happen very often.

If you want to be adventurous, you can assign dwellers to explore the wasteland for supplies, caps, and even additional survivors. You’ll want to equip those you send out with weapons and upgraded gear and supplies to survive the harshness of the wasteland. Here, you will need to monitor your exploring dwellers. Explorers do not come back on their own and if you leave them out in the wasteland for too long, they will die and that’s something you do not want to happen.

The main thing you really want to do is to just keep your dwellers happy. You want to make sure there is a steady supply of water, food, and power or you may find some very unhappy and ultimately dead dwellers.

Fallout fans will most definitely want to download this. I mean what fan wouldn’t want to control the entire fate of a vault in the palm of their hands? This is one of those games however that will suck every bit of free time you have if you’re not careful especially if you’re trying to craft the perfect vault. On the down side of things, it can get a bit repetitive and with not much action really going on, can be a little boring too. I can let issues like that slide though as the game is free and you honestly don’t need to dip into in-app purchases at all.
