I usually stink at playing competitive word games, which is why I usually stay away from games like Scrabble or Words with Friends. That doesn’t mean I dislike them, I just hate playing with other people because I more often than not, lose. I do like playing word puzzle games solo and find it a lot less stressful and humiliating. On that note, Jumbl is the latest word puzzle game I’m checking out from Cubicus.

Jumbl is a rather unique word game that requires you to solve all the jumbled words on the screen to move on. Certain letters on the board can be swapped with others and if they are swapped to the right place, will remain sticky to let you know you’re on the right track. Keep swapping letters until all the words on the board are correct. What makes the game especially challenging is that you only get a set number of swaps you can do before the game tells you you’ve failed. You can’t just blindly swap letters and hope to win.

The reason you want to think long and hard about your swaps is because of the scoring. Each word solved is 1 point and the less swaps you use, the more bonus points you get when you complete a board. You’ll also get some bonus points for completing boards quicker. After completing a board, you move on to the next board. The goal is to see how many levels you can go and how high you can get your score.

If all of this sounds too easy, there’s a “genius” level game you can start that throws away sticky letters. This is for those who are super advanced with word games and think they can solve the board without any help at all. Me, I can’t do it. I’m just not that good.

Overall, Jumbl is quite an interesting word game that I actually don’t mind playing. I can play it at my own pace and trying to solve the words can be fun. It’s pretty challenging too as there are many words in its word list that I wasn’t familiar with before. It’s a nice addition to the whole word-puzzle genre and fans for word games should enjoy this.
