Smashy Road: Wanted Review [iOS]

smashyroad_iconHow many of you have played any of Grand Theft Auto before? If you take away the violence, the gun play, the crimes, the story, and pretty much everything that’s controversial about the game, you get a rather good driving game. Albeit a driving game where you’re mostly trying to out run cops. If you want that same experience on mobile, you should check out Smashy Road: Wanted by developer RK Games. Smashy Road: Wanted takes that GTA driving experience and shrinks it down, simplifies it to its basic mechanics, and sticks it in an isometric, blocky experience.

While you might think that Smashy Road: Wanted has a lot in common with Crossy Road and that they might be by the same devs, you’d be only half right. The game is very similar in art style and in the way you gain and unlock new vehicles with in-game currency or in-app purchases. It however doesn’t seem to be made by the same guys. The graphics are blocky just like in Crossy Road and the goal of the game is to survive as long as possible by not getting busted by the police. Money can be earned via in-game pickups, daily bonuses, or by watching ads.

Gameplay is very reminiscent of old school Grand Theft Auto where most of the gameplay consisted of trying to outrun the police. In Smashy Road: Wanted though, there is no outrunning the police. They are constantly chasing you but for the most part, it isn’t too hard to keep ahead of them. Like GTA, you also get wanted star levels and the higher your wanted level is, the higher grade the authorities are that get sent to chase you. Instead of police cars, you get SWAT, special forces, and military vehicles that want to stop you.

In terms of gameplay, it’s really not bad at all. Outrunning cops is always pretty fun (virtually of course and never in real life) and the possible destruction and mayhem can be enjoyable. What isn’t enjoyable are the ads that pop up almost every other time you start a new game, but it’s a free-to-play game so what do you expect. Replay value is so-so as it’s basically the same each time you play it. The only real goal being to unlock new vehicles to use. Overall, I’d say to check it out if you want something mindless and fun to play to kill time.
