Drivey Car Review – Left Turns Only [iOS]

driveycar_iconWho doesn’t love a good casual game? I’m not afraid to admit that as much as I am a “hardcore” gamer, I don’t mind playing the occasional senseless game on my iPhone. I’m sure many of you do too. I’m not talking about puzzle games or arcade games, but basically games where you do nothing but tap the screen to get the highest score. Think Flappy Bird and all the various clones. In a way, this new game, Drivey Car by Apricity Labs is like that, except not as random and a bit more skill based.

Drivey Car looks like many of the current crop of blocky casual games out there. The difference is in the gameplay. It’s still one of those games that really simple in nature but difficult as hell to actually master. I say “simple” because the only thing you do in this game is make left turns in an attempt to make it around the block. That’s all you do. What makes it challenging however is that you can only make left turns. If you turn too much left, you can’t compensate by turning right. That means you have to be pretty accurate with your left turns which is easier said than done.

My highest score right now is only about 11 laps which isn’t too terrible considering the highest score on the leaderboards right now is only 32 laps.

There’s one thing I’m not digging too much about it and that’s how you earn coins. You don’t really earn that much playing. Instead, coins are given to you on a time bases, which increases each time or you can watch ad based videos to get more. Neither of which are really that great and would have preferred a more skill based way to gain more coins while playing than just waiting and watching. BTW, you need coins to unlock new vehicles, though it doesn’t really seem like vehicle choice affects gameplay.

Overall, Drivey Car can be pretty fun and addictive even though all you do is make left turns over and over again.
